I went to Yosemite last year to capture the beauty of the Sierra in a new light. When I arrived, the rangers were using fire to clear out the underbrush, and the valley was filled with smoke for days. Rainier, but I did discover an abundance of wildflowers! This painting captures the beautiful blooms up close, in impressionistic color. When I visited France to visit the locales the impressionists had painted, I had to stop by Provence to see if the lavender fields there were as beautiful as I had heard. When I drove up onto the high and windy plateaus of Provence, with the Swiss Alps far in the distance, I was immediately captivated by the rolling plains of purple lavender rows. This painting captures the feeling of being in Provence, surrounded by beauty in every direction.

I went to the San Juan Islands to search for beautiful madrone trees and Northwestern color. I found this grove of madrones growing on the waterline, and it immediately attracted my attention. Hiking out of the Grand Canyon last October, I was able to watch dusk fall over the canyon from a perch about 2/3rd up from the canyon floor. I gather my inspiration from the beauty of the outdoors, and for the first time, this includes a cityscape! This first-ever Open Impressionism cityscape was inspired by my trip to New York City last week. Seeing the city skyline through the trees in Central Park during the magical light of golden hour sent me hunting for my paints and canvas as soon as I returned home to Oregon.

I never get tired of exploring Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock. Every time I'm there, the light and colors are different. This weekend, the weather was forecast to be cloudy all weekend, but instead it was bright and sunny and warm--and perfect weather for taking photo inspirations. This oil painting was created with 24kt gold leaf applied directly to the canvas. The gold leaf peeks out between the brushstrokes, adding a subtle dimension of ever-changing light to the painting.

As the first harbinger of spring, I see these tiny blossoms as the first points of joyful light after a long, overcast winter.
