a #lake & a #mountain #Stunday #ECK for years I have posted pics with this peak above Whiskeytown Lake & incorrectly identified it as Bully Choop. I was wrong. this is Shasta Bally, the tallest peak in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

a Secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a bird of prey with the body of a raptor and the legs of a crane. monogamous birds, they will grow to 4' and look pretty much like each other. they nest in the tops of trees but hunt and catch prey on the ground, usually by stomping the poor rodent, reptile, or whatever to death.
I can imagine a video of it doing that and choreographed with a ZZ Top type fiddler playing a buck dancing tune.

up in the Trinity Mountains along Hwy 3, Scott Mountain Creek heads downstream through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest towards its confluence with Tangle Blue Creek which then merges with the Trinity River.
if there was a single highway in northern California that you could drive for sightseeing, I'd say Hwy 3 should be the one.

South Fork Sacramento River just upstream from a Forest Service bridge of W A Barr Road & located in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. rocks, of course, are everywhere, as are the trees. blue sky, wispy clouds, that sound of water rushing and the wind through the trees, why, it's time for a picnic.

a snowy egret perched in a stand of skinny bamboo during breeding season. the yellow patch on the beak turns red and breeding feathers appear. both male and female display these features so you can't really tell unless you catch them in the act.
I wonder how that works though. males usually compete as best in show for the ladies who choose accordingly. but when both display the same what decides their choice. does one mind being the not as pretty partner.
