An Oak Tree a Day Not my best as this was far away but I ❤️ how deadwood serves as an avian lookout. Alerted to this tree bc crows always let you know & this one is telling the world that the hawk isn’t the boss around here. Also, hawk just ignored the noisy corvid. California #nativePlants #nature
A dead hollow tree on a slope of dried grasses and green native plants. There are two branches extending in a Y shape where a hawk perches at the end of one branch and a crow squawks inches behind

Wading into the "relative versus absolute" El Niño intensity debate: I genuinely think both are important--and I think we lose important information if we focus solely on one vs another. And both, as of late Sep, have now reached or exceeded record levels! [Thread]
Plot by Daniel Swain showing temporal evolution of ONI vs RONI index during 2026, representing two different ways to visualize El Nino intensity. The ONI has been at record levels since May, and the RONI has been at near-record levels since June. Data directly from NOAA.

Where are we now? Well, weekly iteration of absolute index (ONI) has been consistently record-breaking since May (!), & is now fully 1.1C *above previous late Sep records* (+3.1C vs +2.0C record) That is by an *enormous* margin (~55% greater than next largest historical anomaly).

An Oak Tree a Day Well there’s a sycamore in the foreground but that’s def an oak background. This isn’t the wilderness or even Oregon. SoCal WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) & if you’re not paying attention you might miss how intertwined we are w #nature. Pic taken from a parking lot.🙀 #nativePlants
Two deer, one grazing and the other looking up from a sloping area with native plants in the background and landscaped rosemary in the foreground. The picture is bordered by a mature sycamore tree. A very cute deer with very large ears looks at the camera.

An Oak Tree a Day Aside from the funky trunk thing, what is this tree hiding? A double trunk can spell disaster as the bark expands pushing the two apart thus weakening the attachment. I think this one is good tho living its best twins. Look closely, a giant nest? California #nativePlants #nature
An oak tree on a slope looks to have 3 separate trunks but the lower one reaching for the ground might be a separate tree where the canopies intertwine as one. There is a thick duff layer of dried leaves in the foreground with many more trees in the background. The sky is blue with scattered clouds. Looking closer in the canopy there seems to be a giant nest of dried leaves.

An old oak with dark brown bark that has a few waves in its trunk sends out a large side branch that rests on the ground. There is a thick duff layer of brown leaves underneath and green leaves in the canopy that blend with a background of green native plants in a natural setting.

An Oak Tree a Day I used to think that green was just a color. Turns out that it’s what turns light into energy and this coyote brush in front of the oak is working extra hard at that mission. California #nativePlants #nature

What’s Blooming in SoCal? Coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis) in the aster family, a great plant for fall blooms that help pollinators during a season with few flowers. The seeds are dispersed by wind & are abundant so clean up if you don’t want a million of them. Tolerable of anything. #nativePlants

An Oak Tree a Day Getting close. Soon this valley oak (Quercus lobata) will shed its leaves to reveal a very artistic branch structure. Our biggest & most extroverted #native tree. The botanical name is sometimes more perfect. Lobata is for lobe shaped leaves vs valley for the strip malls #nature
A large oak tree leans toward a paved trail lined with other native plants and trees. A closer look at the dark brown branching structure that seems to go every which way and sometimes looks like it curls.

Our park district has included a challenge course within the #nature trail. This is good but also an ‘I don’t think so’ when I look down to see where they expect me to lay down and do something that they call frog kicks.
A sign in the park for the Advanced Challenge course number 16 showing a figure laying on their back with knees bent upward and hands behind their neck. Frog kicks is described below. The area under the sign where we are expected to do frog kicks is dirt, leaves and pointy twigs.

An Oak Tree a Day Why do we let this happen? A developer builds a shopping center among protected trees, promising that they will conserve & save. This shopping center has already lost one heritage tree & the other 2 are being held up by cables after bad pruning. California #nativePlants #nature
A view of an old valley oak in a raised planter between a parking lot and a restaurant with red tiled roofs. . All the lower branches have been removed giving it a pompom affect. White pvc tubes cover heavy cables bracing up the tree. The sky is blue with a few wispy clouds. Looking up at the crisscrossing of cables wrapped around the furrowed bark. More cables and a closer look at the branches that are wrapped evenly with strings of lights. Scars where branches were removed are numerous. A closer look at the witches broom of many small branches where bad cuts were made.

What’s Blooming in SoCal? Telegraph weed (Heterotheca grandiflora) You’ve probably seen this & ignored it because you didn’t look closely. It is in the daisy family so it blooms late in the season benefiting migrating pollinators when flowers are scarce. California #nativePlants #nature
Looking down on a bunch of small yellow daisy shaped flowers on stalks of muted green tall stems.
