who cares about your intent, how would you actually create a legal regime that doesn’t allow abuse? Who designs the questions? Are they voted in? Appointed? Can republican states do these polls? Do you need a grand conspiracy of secret elites to collude to disenfranchise the undesirably stupid?

And while we’re at it let’s legalize capital punishment all over the world, but only for the *truly* evil and guilty. If you want your political project to succeed you actually do need to engage with critics, especially if your platform is “Jim crow but this time it’s actually good”

Well whatta you know? Speed cameras in Oakland reduced speeding by about 80% on the treated corridors, essentially the same result as the speed cameras in San Francisco. Seems like a pretty successful policy, if you ask me.

Here's another Oakland SeeClickFix request from an individual for a bike safety upgrade, but I have no way of commenting to let them know about the project already in development & how to get involved. The city does have the ability to comment but not the capacity.
"Traffic Safety (non-emergency)

I am requesting a protected bike lane. I bike frequently along Grand with my toddler in a trailer or bike seat and illegally parked cars (often belonging to vendors) push us out of the bike lane and into traffic."top down design illustration of Grand Ave in Oakland west of El Embarcadero, showing a 2-way parking protected cycletrack on the south side and a one-way parking protected bikeway on the north side

A project starts construction this month to add dedicated left turn phases to the intersection of Broadway & 27th Street. It's very frustrating that I want to respond to this SeeClickFix report to let them know but the city does not allow comments. Meanwhile the city can comment but doesn't.
"Traffic Safety (non-emergency)
, reported at27th St & Broadway Oakland, California, 94612.

This request's status is Acknowledged,
8/5/26 5:10:30 PM

PLEASE review the multiple requests for traffic safety at 27th and Broadway. We need a left turn signal for cars. Someone was already killed at this intersection, but left turns are gnarly here and extremely dangerous as a pedestrian, a cyclist and as a driver. I'm all three."

It’s no Austin and 2025-2026 weren’t as good as the 4 years before, but it’s also better than nyc, LA, SF/Bay Area (which dominate narratives) along many important variables. And critically a lot of the relatively affordable cities are southern and sprawling a lot, so you lose value via commuting

Jackzilla @jackzilla.land · 06/08/2026
Minneapolis is seen as a yimby success in all of those cities; it is genuinely unusually affordable for its size and amenities, and unusually proactive on housing affordability.

holy moly the comments on this about dealerships
was trying to buy a car--a Ford, as it turns out--last year. I was prepared to pay cash but with effectively a small bonus to reflect the lost financing wins for the dealership. Two dealerships ghosted me, one didn't even try to sell me a car when I visited the dealership in person, one threatened me with physical violence when I walked out after they insulted me for wanting to pay cash, and the last (which was actually a minimally acceptable sales experience) threatened baselessly to repossess my car if I didn't give their sales team a 5-star review. And that's just the Ford dealerships. Toyota didn't know where their inventory was and couldn't answer basic questions about the car. Lexus refused to sell me a car (what?). Mini has taken on way too much BMW in their sales experience.
I'm not a regular car buyer, about once every 7-ish years on average, but I was astonished how bad it's gotten, and that's starting with a very, very low baseline expectation.Mazda dealership basically kidnapped my wife a few years back when she went without me. They took her keys to get the value of the trade-in and wouldn't give them back.
She had to threaten to call the police to get her keys back.

After the threats of physical violence from the sales manager, I started a shouting match on the sales floor to get my keys back, including recounting in detail what they'd threatened to do to me. I was happy that I saw a couple of people walk out.
The behavior amazes me from a pure sales perspective, but then I remember criminals are dumb and car salesmen are maybe a half step above criminals.

a Bar Chart of Inequality in U.S. Senate Representation as of the 1790 Census. It shows the distribution of power in the senate for the original 13 states. The horizontal axis is the cumulative state population from most to least populous. The vertical axis shows the number of senate votes per 100,000 persons. "Grand Ave Complete Streets Paving Project CITY OF OAKLAND The City of Oakland Department of Transportation has reached the 65% Design Milestone for the Grand Avenue Complete Streets Paving Project, with an updated layout for the Grand Lake District that includes physically separated bike lanes, keeps angled parking on both sides of the street, and creates a slow and flexible street layout in this commercial area. Grand Ave & Santa Clara Ave New pedestrian safety islands Physically-separated bike lanes New Loading Zones Angled parking on both sides of Grand Ave (same as today) Santa Clara/Lake Park Intersection This hub of pedestrian activity is home to a weekly Farmers' Market, the Grand Lake Theater, AIMS College Prep High, and a busy on/off-ramp to the 580 freeway. This street design adds pedestrian safety islands at all four crosswalks and a bus boarding island on Grand Ave to shorten pedestrian crossing distances and slow traffic. It reduces Grand Ave to one lane northbound and adds physically-separated bike lanes to the cor-ridor, with floating front-in angled parking. Loading/Flexible Space In response to community concerns about double parking, curbside loading, and food pickup, this design adds new loading zones on Grand Avenue. It also creates a two-way turn lane in the center of Grand Ave for flexibility. Oakland has had a street design upgrade at this location in development since the 90s, but not yet built. The project design includes a new left turn lane and signal phase for High Street, separating the vehicle turn and pedestrian movements. This change could have saved Keith’s life.

make the world safe for kids so that parents can be free of these wasteful expenses and kids will have more freedom to explore, learn who they are, and parents will have less stress - financial and emotional! we've lost ourselves to the car doom loop but it is easier than we think to reverse it

Jackzilla @jackzilla.land · 29/06/2026
many parents rush into the decision to let their kid drive - causing expenses in the form of car repairs, insurance spikes, etc, because they are sick of driving their kid around after a decade and a half, and *have no other choice* due to poor public transit / safe cycling infra.

Jackzilla @jackzilla.land · 29/06/2026
not opposed to social media regulation being on this list but i think the data tying social media to a rise in mental illness and suicide is less convincingly causal for death and injury than 'cars hitting children' and 'access to guns'. moreover, reducing car culture gives kids/parents MORE FREEDOM
160
Jackzilla @jackzilla.land · 29/06/2026
'kids safety' is an amazing goal to pursue, if you follow the data. safe streets, attack car dependency, expand public transit, disincentivize SUVs, higher emissions taxes, restricting firearm access, upgrades to air filters in schools and homes, universal healthcare, baby bonds, on and on.
