“Paris has embarked on a grand transformation, planting 155k trees, adding hundreds of kms of bike lanes, pedestrianising 300 school streets and banning cars from the banks of the Seine. Parking has been turned into green space…Fewer parents fear their child being run over when they walk to school.”

For those that might have missed 4th grade math class, if you keep passing the same cyclist then you are going the same average speed as them and you gain nothing from making a dangerous pass.

I am not going to lie. I absolutely LOVE passing drivers multiple times, especially if they punish pass me like I am slowing their important journey. Driving aggressively in most urban and suburban zones has zero upside and they fully deserve to be reminded of that.

Contrast this with Los Angeles, which does not give cyclists a signal at all from Will Rogers State Beach, where the bike trail ends, to Temescal Gateway Park. American DOTs are hostile to cyclists and pedestrians, and the response, too much driving, is tragic but entirely rational.

That gas cars and trucks have been undercharged for their costs and negative externalities for decades doesn't mean that we should undercharge new cars and trucks more. Charge them all. Make them pay. Can't afford to tow your boat from your vacation home without a subsidy? 🤏🎻

Those saying it's not appropriate to shame "poor" people for being complicit in the ever increasing gas guzzling don't get it. The people raising the average price of a 'car' to $50k weren't poor. American consumers have been chasing a model that is actively*impoverishing* them.

The California Environmental Quality Act is bad for the environment because it gives litigious busybodies the power to delay and block environmentally friendly projects like bike lanes on the grounds that the government has not sufficiently analyzed the bike lanes’ “environmental impacts.”

Plaintiffs argue that Berkeley City Council approved the Hopkins Street bike lane project without conducing necessary environmental reviews.

Nice to have a citation for the stuff we all sort of assume to be true but question if it's just our own biases making it look that way
Screenshot from the article in the quoted post, saying "Piff and his colleagues found that upper-class drivers were more likely to cut other cars off at junctions and ignore pedestrians at crossings. Wealthier people also appeared more willing to lie at work. In one experiment, volunteers were left alone with a jar of sweets ostensibly meant for children. When the researchers returned, upper-class people had snaffled nearly twice as many candies as lower-class people.

“The general pattern seems to be that with wealth and rising power, you become less engaged with the needs of others and less burdened by the needs of social relationships,” Piff said. “Taking candy from children might be the least of our worries but it’s emblematic of the tendency to prioritise one’s own needs over those of others.”
