The inside of the cottage was done up as elaborately as Myra was done up herself. There was no bare inch to be found with the patterned rugs and wall hangings, plump couches and cushioned stools, as well as all the things one expected to find in a witch’s house: dried bundles of herbs hanging from the rafters and shelves of bottles holding mysterious and worrisome contents.

In the process of finding this excerpt--a bit of description if the Triglav temple in Pogzen--I found out that there are plenty of walls in my story, and even more instances of people swallowing. One of those has to be reined in. #WIPSnips #writing #writingcommunity #writesky

The temple stood stark white within the citadel, cutting into the otherwise dark stone of it like a ghost. Its single tower shot out from the centre of the squat round building incongruously, as if whoever took on the task of designing the place of worship changed their mind about the shape halfway through. Where the lower level was heavy-set, each wal thick with buttresses holding it up like a group of friends helping a drunk home, the tower was all latticework over the windows and a pinnacle so sharp it could be mistaken for a giant's spindle

Technically I was traveling as Sister’s money-handler, since her church barred it’s nuns from dealing in any form of wealth, but I might as well admit now that I was (and am) a con man by trade.

One could argue Sister – and the order – was foolish to trust me, but to all the pessimists out there, those of you with no sense of faith or beauty or romance, I’d say who better to handle money than a person used to handling a lot of it? Also, Sister had the personality of a wall, if a wall could stab you. I, on the other hand, have been told I’m both charming and handsome, which is a lot of the reason why I was able to steal so much money to begin with.

#FirstDraftFall: Typically I'd want to have a good idea of my characters, character arcs, and major story beats. For short fiction, I tend to have a full scene list as well. For longer fiction, I have a rough outline of what needs to happen in each act and then fill in a scene list from there.

I looked at a ton of references for penthouse apartments and even built Rei's flat in House Flipper 2 to figure out how to write this scene. 😅 From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The space was maximalist without being too loud about it. His PR company had gone all in on Rei's home planet being a waterworld. The dark stone floor matched the fireplace wall, broken up with dark teal panels, gray wood, and bookcases. A large area rug designated the lounge, a plush gold shag with veins on white running through it. Across from the fireplace was a comfortable brown sofa covered in pillows, and a sea green ottoman sat opposite two overwrought matching chairs. The black, baby grand piano shoved into the corner didn't fit at all, but it blocked egress onto the second balcony, which was perfectly fine by him. It was also covered in plants, a vestige from home when subsurface green spaces had been a necessity for scrubbing the air.

As time passed, heavy cloud cover darkened the sky, making it difficult to find his path through the accursed trees. Milo kept walking, searching for the house where the witch lived. But despite being in Hatwick Wood hundreds of times, it was no longer familiar. The forest itself was poised to hurt him. Darkness was falling fast, and his feet were unsure. As he stumbled over unseen roots, he placed a hand on the rough surface of an alder to try and regain his balance. Something he had done a thousand times, but this time he pulled back with a short yelp.
A flame of sharp pain started in his fingers and blazed through his hands, up his arms, through his whole body, wrapping around his heart like a snake squeezing its prey. It lasted a moment before it released and returned to his fingers. Tears blurred his vision, hand pulsing in agony like he’d dipped it in acid.
