Two pinpricks of golden green in the dark. A ghoul in the closet? Watching, waiting, for the child to sleep so it can scurry to its mischief? It blinks. The child runs -- Out from the covers, to the switch! Light blooms. A charcoal tabby stretches, unbothered, from its closet perch. #ShortStory #Cat

Here's a little setting for my cozy witch short story You Make Your Own Luck. I published it last year in a queer, witch themed chapbook. #WIPSnips #Witches #AmPublished #IndieAuthor
The inside of the cottage was done up as elaborately as Myra was done up herself. There was no bare inch to be found with the patterned rugs and wall hangings, plump couches and cushioned stools, as well as all the things one expected to find in a witch’s house: dried bundles of herbs hanging from the rafters and shelves of bottles holding mysterious and worrisome contents.

With one WIP set in outer space and one set in autumn, petal was tricky one, so I went with a more generic Flower. #WIPSnips #WritingPrompt #WriteSky
“I know potted isn’t normal,” Sincere said as he stood again. “But Perry hates killing flowers just for a bouquet.”
“When he was four or five,” Dignity said. “He made me one from the flowers in the greenhouse. He was so distraught a few days later to find out that picking the flowers killed them that he cried himself to sleep.”
“I’m definitely rubbing that into his face next time I see him.”

Perry with a broken heart 💔 #WIPSnips #AmQuerying #Heartbreak #WriteSky
The rest of it? The rest of it — feeling for a while intensely understood, the cozy domesticity, being in love — he needed to tuck it away, somewhere deep and guarded inside, until he had healed up strong enough to face it. To face that he had something, lost it, and was afraid he would never have it again. After all, Mom never fell in love after Dad.

There is an abundance of "wells" in my fiction. But I think this one is in the midst of an interesting exchange. #WIPSnips #AmWriting #AmEditing #Banter
“Do you look like your mother?”
“Some bits. The hair, mostly.” She brushed an errant strand off her forehead. “I don’t remember her face well enough to claim anything else.”
   “I’m sorry.”
   “Don’t --”
“I forgot. You don’t like pity.”
The corner of her mouth curled up just a hint. A high, clear note in the midst of a catastrophe.

It starts with a spark. The beautiful strike and sizzle of a match. Fire is like an art form -- how it dances, grows, consumes. No one blames a painter for using paint. But an arsonist for using flame?... My lawyer doesn’t like it when I talk like this. #ShortStory #MicroFiction #Arson #Flash

Sometimes you can read your manuscript 20 times and still miss the thing that's obvious to everyone else. Not because you're a bad writer. Because you're simply too close to the story. What’s one part of your manuscript you suspect you might be too close to see clearly? #WritingCommunity #AmWriting

Oh, Perry, my little idealistic, heart-on-his-sleeve, plant-loving workaholic. #WIPSnips #AmQuerying #WritingPrompt #OCs
Even in his workaholic ways, one thing Perry always attempted to observe was the weekend. Sure, maybe he had to go into the greenhouse to check on a delicate plant that needed special care and that he trusted with no one else. But he wouldn’t spend the entire day there, at least. Usually.

My #scifi novel doesn't really use the word nation, but here's something civic-themed I think fits the prompt. Yay, scifi worldbuilding. #WIPSnips #AmQuerying #WritingPrompt #Worldbuilding
The development of Elios from scientific outpost to civilian settlement to sprawling city-state had been slow until it had been fast. Science was painfully sluggish when you were desperate for a cure, and humanity was desperate for the biggest one of all: finding new homes. Galaxies of nomads searched and were searching for a rock to plant their feet on, and when an outpost proved viable — the temperatures survivable, the atmosphere changeable, the ground growable — the settlers came flooding. After the settlers came the boom.

A single, brown-crisped leaf floated down and landed in her hair. And if there was any tension left in that moment, it vanished when he plucked it away, chuckling. Evelyn took the leaf from his fingers and cast it into the stream where it was carried away like a little boat.

Haven had done so much to grow. To change. To heal. Perry didn’t want to mess it all up. And after he’d been so standoffish since he’d returned to Taros, the signals he had to be giving off were more tangled than a potted plant that’s become rootbound.

Haven remembered the first time he saw Elios from his cockpit window, a glistening orb in the bleakness of the vast universe. Before Elios, there had been so many other planets, moons, and space stations that had been no more than a false lead or a closed door. Even true leads were a gamble. Just as many settlements went to ruin as flourished into something tolerable. But at the sight of Elios, something had pulled in his gut to take a vital chance on this one, that this leap of faith might pay off.
