How does individual behavior reflect the organization of the society it belongs to? Excited to share our new paper with @ishmailsaboor.bsky.social & team: a naked mole-rat’s spontaneous behavior in isolation predicts its identity, colony membership, and rank within its colony.

I worry about the dialogue that this essay engenders, especially for black academics that are pre-tenure. These scholars already navigate difficult terrain. This essay gives fodder to the argument that they are unqualified and increases the burden they have to over-produce.

However, there were also scores of black academics hired who were amazingly talented and ready for the job - who perhaps traditionally might have been overlooked. This too is undeniable, and I think that will become even more clear in years to come as these scholars thrive.

It's undeniable that during the early 2020s, George Floyd racial reckoning hysteria, everyone wanted to hire black people, including academia. During this breakneck race, were there people hired who could have used more time training, or who didn't meet traditional metrics of success? Sure.

Very thought provoking and interesting read. There are some serious critiques and flaws noted here of the "progressive performatism" of the early 2020s George Floyd era. However, it would be a shame if ppl walked away from reading this thinking that many Black academics are not qualified.
