Among Michael Hordern's many achievements is that it he read the audiobook of The Horse And His Boy so perfectly to the degree that it has been the platonic ideal of something to listen to when falling asleep since I discovered it aged six.

Feel like just by the law of averages it might be Shakespeare or something. (Obviously, much Shakespeare criticism is good. But there is just an awful lot of it and some of it is necessarily bad or bonkers etc)

Finally read Edna O'Brien's The Country Girls trilogy, having had them on the Kindle since 2020. Beautiful and terribly sad. Was such a delight to finally have Baba's voice and mind in that last book and then, of course, it made it all the sadder.

Put on some nice clothes but then looked out the window and immediately felt like a man of slovenly appearance.
A male mandarin duck who gets off purely on being mean who saw that I had put on the one nice outfit I own for one of the most important evenings of my life and decided to sartorially annihilate me, even though, due to having no friends, it had planned to do nothing all evening but hang out on this shit rusty metal railing staring at its own reflection in a window. Incidentally, later this would become the cover shot for my unsuccessful rustic synth-based confessional 1983 solo LP 'Mandarin Duck Outside My Window'.

Since I was quite small "Who killed the most chickens in Shakespeare" "Macbeth did murder most fowl"* *Too many degrees in literature footnote: it can also be Claudius if you are trying to cover all bases for when it is used.

@loreandordure.com just remembered I had said I would mention this as I am about to force myself to do a version of it with something and hoping you are adequately post crisis. The 15 minute PhD freewrite thing is that you make yourself do a 15 minute freewrite which is on your thesis topic

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately: the thing about the best comics being the comics you read as a kid and the best music being the music you listened to a teenager and so on is actually true, and it is in fact true *on an objective level*, for everyone! Yes, I do mean objective…

hello I need pedagogy/quiz design tips! If I ask students to write 1-2 sentences is that still short answer? 2-3 sentences? How much time should I allot for these types of questions? I think I have to put a firm time limit in place because they are taking foooorever compared to my ballpark

A big ask, no pressure & I know people have better things to do but if about 15-20 people buy this from Blackwell's in the next few hours it's likely I'd have the number 1 & 2 books in their chart & that might be enough to finally persuade an American publisher to get my books out over there...

Nominative Determinism of the week, surely.
Students at Aardman's Academy are also being taught to embrace imperfection in the painstaking art of stop-motion, where every blink, smile and movement is created by hand.
Art director Kitty Clay said a lot of the models are still being used 20 years after they were made.

The Viz comic’s “Benjamin Britten and his embittered bittern”. Sorry, it’s a 22-panel comic with a lot of text, so I’m afraid that’s all you’re getting. But I hope you get the idea.

Many, many years ago, I was part of a project that built a massive database of soldier names from English armies 1369-1453 (it was then about 250,000 names, now 300,000 or so). We launched it at a conference in the summer of 2009. Obviously a slow news day as the press release went global.
