Sometimes I think it's worth stepping back and thinking about all the effort/energy that is going into integrating something literally called "artificial" into our education system. Like, it's in the name...

It’s mine too but it’s so few points to really matter at the end of the semester plus not many kids have passes left 🤷‍♀️

Have unused passes at the end of the semester? Hand them in for a few bonus points.

Plus, they are responsible for hanging on to their passes, they must get stapled to the late work or I don’t take it. Lost passes? Not my problem. I print them on heavy neon cardstock and write each kids’ name so I know they aren’t copies.

This works for me because I can never keep track of 5-10% per day late or whatever. I also could never do a zero tolerance policy on late work. So this helps hold kids to deadlines with the acknowledgement that life happens sometimes.

I give students 3 “late work passes” for each semester. They can use them for any assignment (formative or summative), their decision. I have weighted categories so often students won’t bother using a pass on a formative. Can’t use on tests/quizzes.

Once again, it’s not fair to any other Airbnb hosts anywhere that my mom had one and it was perfect in every way, all amenities and extras you wouldn’t even think about—she had them. And yes, I realize I’m a privileged princess.

And the hardest part is that I want to say all of this right to their damn faces but I can’t because I love my job (and want to keep it!) and take pride in it, even when others don’t.

Look, teaching in June is HARD. Everyone is tired. But JFC we can’t sit in a meeting and seriously discuss ways to up rigor and pushing for better than mediocrity and then just stop all learning with a week left! Shit, some of these teachers quit two weeks ago after seniors were done.

The ELA teacher further down the hall…you guessed it, study hall. Meanwhile, kids are allowed to wander the halls doing fuck all (because they’re bored in class), disrupting people who are actually busy doing their jobs.

Ignoring the fact that that is not, in fact, rigor, this same “teacher” has given his classes study hall for this last week of school. What are they studying for you might ask? Nothing for his class, he’s done. His fellow nationalist down the hall also having study halls.

The “science” “teacher” (he is super Christian nationalist and thinks evolution is the biggest hoax AND he lectures every day for all 52 minutes of a 52-minute period) pipes up and says one way to raise rigor is to eliminate Ds as grades—either a C or better or failure.

Last week my principal asked staff for a “wish list” to brainstorm academic goals. I said, “raise the rigor”. He asked if I had specific ideas and I said “ohhh boy, so many ideas!” and we moved on to making the list.

Did some airplane travel this week- the number of people back to wearing masks over hantavirus and Ebola is truly shocking.
I feel sad for the people who live their lives in fear over over-hyped, extremely rare diseases.
People, so fearful that they can't go out in public or travel without masks...
I pity them, I worry for their mental health, I even worry for our country that has so many guillible people - but these poor fools are not my enemy.

Big move in curbing screen time in LA — banning computer use until second grade and then putting limits on screen time. My concern: Ss with disabilities and in need of intervention would get MORE I-ready … and that feels problematic (highest need should yield MORE *human* contact, not tech)

I hear you, but children are not becoming “EXTREMELY different” in isolation. Children mirror ecosystems. They are developing inside stressed families, overwhelmed school systems, economic instability with adults who are dysregulated, disconnected, and disrespectful. Children learn alongside us.

Realizing that “they will rob themselves of themselves” sounds like I am blaming kids! I am not. My students are learning in a school district that refuses to disable the “AI Overview” feature & is stuffing slop tools down their throats.

Not true. There are many reasons why we got here. People not voting is one of them. Not even the most important one. This pedestrian analysis needs to stop. The number one reason we got here, above all, is racism. Until we contend with that we won’t even understand voter disenfranchisement.

COVID killed (and is still killing) over 1 million Americans and the long-term effects of (re)infection continue to impact tens of millions more, yet our response to COVID was framed as an overblown exaggeration. But now phones & #edtech are framed as a "legitimate" moral panic worth responding to!
