The Retreat from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Language Change on Large U.S. Foundation Websites, 2019–2025

Following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, many US organizations, including large private foundations, publicly foregrounded language related to DEI. Beginning in 2023, a series of legal and political developments shifted the institutional environment: the Supreme Court’s ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (2023), state-level anti-DEI legislation, and Executive Order 14151 (2025). Using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, we construct a longitudinal corpus of archived web pages from thirteen large U.S. private foundations with established DEI vocabulary and track the frequency of sixty-seven DEI-related terms from 2019 to 2025. Among eight foundations with paired 2023 and 2025 data, six reduced their DEI word intensity; most terms present in the paired corpus declined, with race-related terms contributing the largest share of the drop. The aggregate decline on the full sixty-seven-term index is marginal (exact Wilcoxon p = .074, one-sided); evidence is stronger on the dictionary’s definitional core, the diversity-equity-inclusion triad and its variants (p = .031). The decline concentrates in the 2024–2025 window containing the January 2025 executive orders: eight of nine foundations fell (p = .020), with scattered movement earlier. Qualitative comparison of archived pages illustrates three pathways of retreat: elimination of equity framing, substitution of technical for justice-oriented vocabulary, and reduced prominence through site redesign. These patterns suggest institutional isomorphism operating in reverse—convergent abandonment amid shared political pressure—though our descriptive design cannot identify the mechanism. The findings establish an empirical baseline for tracking organizational communication about equity under political pressure.

Spayd writes that the writing and publishing of Unlocking Justice is a political act in today's world: a proud invitation to work towards justice and equity in the criminal justice system using math and statistics, made accessible for a wide audience. She says it would be irresponsible and disingenuous to ignore the advocacy and resistance the book boldly encourages; instead she wants to amplify Topaz's activism and echo his invitation to readers to join the fight. To the question "why do they have to make math political?" she responds that math has been political far longer than Topaz or she have been around: the discipline's politics have promoted certain ideas and people while demoting and minoritizing others. Examples: infinite series, discovered by Madhava and Nilakantha three centuries before Newton and Leibniz but widely attributed to the western greats, and regression, developed by Galton for his still-reverberating eugenics agenda. On the other end of the spectrum, Topaz highlights data analysis and visualizations by Ida B. Wells and W.E.B. Du Bois that raised awareness of racial violence and countered racial stereotypes. Humans do math and bring their identities to their work; nearly everything is political now, including books, data, and knowledge. She argues that becoming a math activist is not accepting the slanderous accusation that higher education is liberal indoctrination; rather, it is academics' professional responsibility to enter political spheres and pursue answers with a critical lens, guiding students to draw their own conclusions—which, she concludes, is what Topaz does for readers of Unlocking Justice.

Professor Topaz's book, Unlocking Justice, uses lively writing and concrete data to illustrate how we can learn from data to make our society more just and equitable. He shares engaging stories and offers context for interpreting information to show how the sum of individual experiences is really the story of the structural application of our legal system. Only after understanding who we are and how we got here can we transform our criminal legal system
into a criminal *justice* system. Unlocking Justice is hopeful and galvanizing. It is fun to read and I'm filled with hope! I think it is particularly important to mention this as we grapple with the book's serious subject during a precarious moment in American history when we are collectively asking big questions about
how committed we are to democracy and justice.

Disclosing for first time: I’m thinking of how I resigned from the SBE Committee of Visitors (basically, external review) a year ago because I wanted our report to address Trump’s cuts/directives and NSF leadership’s compliance and I got told no, I was being too political. 🤷🏻‍♂️😭
