Bertrand Russell Shows How to Respond to Fascists Who Want to Debate
Late in his life, the prominent English mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell was subject to an attempt in the early 1960s by Oswald Mosley to provoke him into a debate about the merits of fascism. Before WWII,

Revising a story. My writing group suggested that the setting for the climax feels strange. In my mind it felt like the obvious answer logistically, and while I understood the feedback it felt impossible to take. Then I realized how easily I could change it and I feel like a genius.

In the 1800s, people used to roll out picnics to watch public executions in the Pacific Northwest. That followed a history of lynchings. I wrote about the death penalty in this moment and Oregon's loudest voice against it. leahsottile.substack.com/p/76-an-amer...

“I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman told Decoded co-author and POLITICO senior tech reporter Brendan Bordelon. Asked specifically where he diverges from Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei, Altman said, “we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.”

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that you, like me, have a large pile (or digital equivalent) of books or articles you've been meaning to get around to reading, plus maybe a long queue of podcast episodes to which you'd love to listen, if only you had the time.

Is it not late? A late time to be living? Are
not our generations the crucial ones? For we have changed the world. Are not our heightened times the important ones?
For we have nuclear bombs. Are we not especially significant because our century is?our century and its unique Holo-caust, its refugee populations, its serial totalitarian extermi-nations; our century and its antibiotics, silicon chips, men on the moon, and spliced genes? No, we are not and it is not.
These times of ours are ordinary times, a slice of life like any other. Who can bear to hear this, or who will consider it?
Though perhaps we are the last generation-now there's a comfort. Take the bomb threat away and what are we? Ordinary..

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)
