I saw one of these books (a friend was given it as a gift for his kids) and it was so ugly and banal, I can’t imagine anyone reading it even once. Whereas great children’s books by real writers & illustrators live in your head forever. And for heaven’s sake do not feed pictures of kids into genAI

I read "See here for details" in a doc today and I almost fainted. This happens because the mental model of many engineers writing docs is that of a classroom, where teachers point to things in books and chalkboards. This is not Physics 101, buddy — you're explaining how to troubleshoot a 404.

I put together an "Advent of docs" at work. It's 24 very small (ok, 5 are not that small) tasks to try to improve documentation of services. I purposely left out more complex docs like features spanning multiple services, or flow diagrams (also multi-service).
