It shows you how bad the problem is that limiting people to 24 submissions a year will make a meaningful difference.

There are a number of folks who have written extensively on this problem. The fact the critique isn't better known is in part because the critics don't have the money and media power of the AI lobby. Also they're often women, BIPOC, queer, or some combination of all three.

Back of the envelope calculations: 3600 years of research time went into the collective application process. The research will fund 3200 years of research. We are 400 research years poorer as a result of this. 1/2

Science will always appear to be in a crisis if we insist on comparing it to an ideal that has never existed and can never exist. It is delusional to claim that science cannot produce useful knowledge unless it matches a confabulation made up by those who refuse to understand it as a social process.

"Contemporary narratives often frame Open Science and metascience as novel frontiers of transparency and rigor, obscuring their deep roots in feminist methodologies and critical social science traditions." New work by @maddipow.bsky.social
Abstract
Recent years have seen growing emphasis on “Open Science,” a movement to enhance research transparency, robustness, and accountability. Prompted by concerns over fraud, questionable research practices, and low reproducibility in psychological research that emerged in the 2010s, Open Science has been framed by some dominant advocates as a new approach to research in psychology and across the social sciences. However, women in social science have long practiced and promoted principles now hailed as innovative, although their contributions are often left out of mainstream narratives. This erasure is troubling, especially as feminist scholars have critiqued the increasingly exclusionary culture of mainstream science reform. This article traces the overlooked contributions of five pioneering women: Mary Whiton Calkins and her replication efforts in the 1890s; Helen Bradford Thompson Woolley, who advocated for analytical precision in the 1910s; Alice Bryan’s 1940s adversarial collaboration; Carolyn Wood Sherif’s metascientific work in the 1960s; and Leonore Tiefer’s promotion of conflict-of-interest declarations of sex research in the 2000s. I document how their contributions laid the intellectual foundations of what is now contemporary Open Science in the social sciences. In doing so, I celebrate a lineage of feminist scientific labor that has always emphasized openness, ethics, and equity.

Top ten myths scientists have about science: 1. Good science is guided solely by the search for Truth. 2. 1 is logically sound. 3. Publishers can exist simply to disseminate results, not for profits. 4. Talks are meant to convey information, not power.

I agree with this - amid all the creative ideas people have had for new assessments, we also need an explicit, robust defence of the essay. Writing essays does something to your thinking and improves your neural wiring. You can produce essays (as objects) with AI, but you don't get this benefit.

It will never stop being funny to me that the street fighter subreddit has a much better, well reasoned ai policy vis a vis literally all universities.
Hi, thanks for posting! We do appreciate you thinking of us even though we have to moderate.

Our stance on all AI generated content (Images, Video, Voiceovers, and whatever else LLM based AI gets up to in the future):

At best, they are approximations of street fighter characters as the AI has no clue what it is trying to create. Because of this, there is no street fighter content so they are not allowed. (rule 1)

Also, they aren't allowed per our source rule. As AI sources cannot be tracked, we must assume that they use uncredited sources in the learning data. (rule 5)

Finally, AI images, video, text, and voiceovers are barely any different than posting a screenshot of a google search. The level of effort is so low that we consider it spam (rule 3).

Because of these reasons, AI art and other AI content is not allowed.

If you would like to contact the moderators about this removal, you can do so here.
