Also, that repetition of 'all the world wondered' always makes me think of the French general Bosquet's comments on the Charge: "C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre"

Just catching up with this (jolly good). Chaps, English teacher who's taught this for over a decade to tired GCSE students here: it's 'theirs but to do AND die' there's no 'or' in there (adding to the fatalism).

Well, 'the Puritans' were not a homogeneous faction. Milton himself wrote poems and prose trashing mainstream Presbyterian dogma. He wasn't even a normal congregationalist. Poetry also given much more leeway by the censors post-Restoration...

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

Also, "we apologise that you find these adverts distressing" is just another phrasing of the classic bully line of "I'm sorry you felt hurt by what I did". Get the active/passive right: YOU upset YOUR viewers by streaming inappropriate adverts for programming specifically designed for younger people

@alexhorne.bsky.social @channel4tv.bsky.social @channel4.bsky.social . I've just submitted this complaint to Channel 4. Alex, we love what you do and I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about this, but I do think streaming on Channel 4 needs a little more care!
The test of a complaint to Channel 4 (my wife has pointed out that I put down too many actuallys, but it was written with some ire: 'This is a complaint about the adverts for channel 4 programmes on Taskmaster Bleeped, being streamed on the Channel 4 streaming app. Given that it's Taskmaster Bleeped, so clearly designed to be viewed by families with younger children, I think it's a major mistake to include adverts for Channel 4 programmes designed for adults. It's actually irresponsible. This evening, we were watching an episode (Series 11 Episode 3) with our 9 year old son. He loves watching this programme: it's currently part of our weekly ritual. In the first ad break, you included an advert for the documentary 'Love You to Death': the advert is clearly inappropriate for children. It's actually deeply disturbing. It elicited a visceral response from my son: he was terrified and disturbed. It wrecked his ability to enjoy the rest of the programme. I would like an explanation for why this happened. And an apology. I really don't think that this is suitable and you ought to consider your policy with advertising on your streaming platform.'

In response to Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts, the Public Safety Act 1936 made it an offence under to march in uniform. The Crime and Policing Bill 2026 gave the police the power to order the removal of face coverings at a protest. We cannot stand by and allow the normalisation of fascist intimidation.
