The defence that vast sums paid to enable a football club to succeed were OK if paid allegedly not by the owner but by a foreign state is hardly attractive. Clubs should have remained owned and funded in their local communities.

On Friday, the killing of the infant by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank sparked outrage after soldiers opened fire on the family’s vehicle despite it having complied with an order to stop. Sam was killed and his mother, Daniyah Abu Haikal, and father, Fahed Abu Haikal, were both injured. Continue reading...

Dear Yvette,

We are writing to ask you to take urgent, concrete action to counter the escalation of violations against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, in particular by ending trade with illegal Israeli settlements.

As you know, on 19 May 2026 Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich instructed the Israeli Civil Administration to initiate proceedings for the displacement of the Palestinian Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar in the occupied West Bank, and the destruction of their property, which would constitute the war crime of forcible transfer. The community of Khan al-Ahmar has been embroiled in a gruelling struggle against erasure, displacement and state-backed settler violence as part of Israel’s E1 plan, which as you know seeks to bisect the West Bank and will make the two-state solution that we all want to seeIrene Campbell MP

By far the biggest problem with delegating judgement to machines is the people who own the machines can tune them towards outcomes they prefer but those who don't own anything can't. It's not the technology. It's a transfer of decision making power from rational accountable systems to capital.

Blair’s fossil fuel ideas ‘bizarre’ in face of energy and climate crises, experts say
Energy specialists say abandoning net zero and increasing oil and gas drilling would cause more instability for Britons Abandoning net zero and drilling for more oil and gas in the North Sea would be a massive setback for the UK and would not help the economy, leading experts have said in response to claims by the former prime minister Tony Blair. “This is a bizarre intervention to make during the worst May heatwave on record and when the Iran crisis is providing yet more evidence of the enormous costs of oil and gas,” said Ed Matthew, the UK programme director at the E3G thinktank. “Clean energy is cheaper energy - it protects our bills from prices skyrocketing, its running costs are virtually zero, and it doesn’t cause climate change which threatens economic collapse ... The government should ignore Blair’s ideological nonsense and focus on what works.” Continue reading...
