Just build housing! The city leadership as a whole should've come out against this idea immediately. It has easy access to parks in the hottest area of the city, housing is a no brainer. Frey truly has no vision for the city and is just chasing trends.

A real tension in Minneapolis politics is the post-Surge activation of people whose main point of interaction with community is Instagram. No clue how to find information that isn't spoon-fed via vertical video or a social-optimized graphic, blundering into situations confused and misinformed.

AOC: Millennials are not punk kids anymore. We're grown adults with mortgages and kids, and that generation is starting to be decisive at the polls. And there is anger at being ignored, having our economic futures mortgaged by the generations that came before us and we're taking the reins

People ask me all the time: "Dr. Commish, why did the Blue Line Extension get more expensive?" The honest answer is because we listened. And it's still the most affordable federal light rail project of its kind, per mile, in the entire country. 🧵

Did Minneapolis’ ugliest building have to be this bad?
An unholy storm merging a disdain for the past with an embrace of poor taste left downtown’s streets bereft.

My prediction was correct. The initial proposal for Les Bolstad looks like something out of Blaine or Lakeville. Not like something at the heart of the metro, the amount of surface parking alone is astounding. Hopefully Falcon Heights rejects this proposal.

Rachel Development put in a $30.5M bid for the UMN golf course. Shame they are responsible for some of the ugliest projects I've seen. Hopefully, the cities can guide the development to be more urban than suburban.

Nice Ride vanished from the city's streets in 2023, but it could soon be back with a boost from e-bikes at Great Plains Institute.

Really important point about the Minnesota fraud scandal from @citizencohn.bsky.social: open.substack.com/pub/thebulwa...
But insofar as the scandal had to do with good governance, or the lack thereof, it’s not clear how much responsibility for that lies with the Walz administration and how much lies with factors beyond its control—like the shape of the American welfare state, and how it has evolved in modern times.

Here it’s useful to look abroad, to note how differently the welfare state works in some peer countries. The assistance programs of Western and Northern Europe tend to be universal, meaning they offer help to everybody, while the programs in the United States tend to be targeted, meaning they serve narrow, carefully defined sectors of the population. That creates incentives to game the eligibility criteria. Another difference is that the European governments are more likely to provide housing or deliver services like childcare directly. The United States, by contrast, outsources more of that work to the private sector, which means there are more opportunities for organizations and businesses to raid the public treasury.

The looming MFE teachers strike and potential MPLS school downsize just reminds me that there aren't any leaders advocating for a positive vision for public schools with the goal of enrolling all children in Minneapolis. Instead everyone is focused on right sizing and charter schools.
