I always think about this when people are doing discourse about “authenticity” when chefs fuse newer ingredients into their own culture’s cuisine, because many meals we consider “traditional” to a particular cuisine are really quite modern and a result of globalization and fusion

screenshots from the latest season of British Bake Off of a chef named Mo, he's a tan skinned young man. He's got dark hair falling over his forehead and a beard. He's saying, "I come with a lot of baggage, but it's, like, the good baggage." Mo continued, "Like Louis Vuitton baggage."

Very personal and individual gripe but the St. Louis Park stations are far enough north of the couple spots I go to in SLP that it’s not gonna allow those to become transit trips for me

I used to think it was fun, but every time I’ve made it onto a sports broadcast or account, people have made weird comments about me. The NHL posted my cousins getting a puck during warm-ups and people made weird comments about them. I wish they’d stop posting people up close or disable comments

I love writing mundane things in my daily journal because then I get to find fun coincidences, such as we went out for ice cream tonight and we also went out for ice cream on the same date last year. This discovery may mean that September 24 is now a permanent ice cream holiday for us

Anyone have fun ideas for old t-shirts that are not a quilt? I am drowning in t-shirts but don’t want to get rid of what I have. I have some framed and hung up as decor but do not have space for many more of those. Something that uses a large quantity of shirts like a quilt is preferable.

Kacey Musgraves was an absolute delight tonight. And, yes, as you may have heard, she has a giant pair of floating, low-hanging (disco) balls as part of her stage set up. Here's my review (gift link):

Concert review: Kacey Musgraves was charming and cheeky at Target Center

I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...
We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

Anyway, here’s a section that will cut you to your core. Odds are 1-2% of the local Latino population has been deported & one community member thinks 25% have left.
“We lost a lot of our community,” said Rudy Trujillo, owner of accounting firm Trujillo Service at 420 E. Lake St., whose clients are mostly Latino immigrants.
He estimates that one in four Latinos left the Twin Cities, either by self-deportation or moving to another state.
No hard data is yet available. About 235,000 Hispanic people lived in the seven-county metro area in 2024, according to census data. The 5,000th detainee (most detainees were of Latin-American descent) was flown out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in August, Minnesota Reformer reports.

So much of race is clearly vibes based on "what do white people think you look like", and mixed race (esp. wasianness) really highlights this. Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Darren Criss are both wasian but get talked about completely differently from Charles Melton and Henry Golding (equally wasian)
