I wonder if this possibly reflects the transition to a service-industry economy that began to take place during the sixties and really took off in the eighties?

Trump really benefits from his reputation of world-spanning ignorance. Reporters just accept jaw-dropping foolishness from him because everyone knows he's kind of an idiot. These exceedingly low expectations are one of his biggest assets, along with a lack of shame. time.com/article/2026...

I think a lot about Biden/Garland keeping David Weiss on as US Attorney, because they didn't want to meddle with the Hunter probe. And then Garland elevating Weiss to special counsel so he could convict Hunter. And this having ZERO IMPACT on the GOP certainty that Biden was rigging the DOJ

Not to be a party pooper but a Democratic Congress is absolutely not going to lower costs; it just won't be in their power no matter how much they'd like to. Hard to tell what the political consequences of being unable to follow through on their central campaign promise will be.

The "play Minecraft" bug in America.gov's AI is very funny, but I'll note that it's such a remarkably *governmental* AI hallucination. Existentialism but *also* you need your paperwork: "You. You. You are alive. You still have to bring two forms of ID."

What's fun about this whole contretemps and why it's worth watching again is how smirky Schmitt starts out - this is going to be his big moment – and how honest a puzzled Smith comes off, and how sharp Klobuchar was to quickly figure out the basic mistake. And then how pissy Schmitt gets at her.

Interesting! Thank you. I looked at this dataset matched up against Gallup's right direction question, and it looks like there was strong correllation until recently (around 2006-8). Then it's much weaker.

Aaron is not underrating this. It's cinema. The sly smirk when Schmitt thinks he's gotten Smith to perjure himself. The hasty vanishing of the sign. Klobuchar getting Kennedy to hold it up. Schmitt getting LOUD and ANGRY when Klobuchar points out he mixed up the Hawks and Hawkeyes.

That's an empirically testable claim, then, since we would expect it to match up with other polling like "is the country going in the right direction?"

No. Federal appropriations law has long barred using taxpayer funds for political advertising.

Grassley was first elected to the Senate in 1980. He's seen his state go from reliably red to reliably blue to belweather to reliably red again. I wonder if he'll see it go through one more change?

Alexander Deebus @hyperbole.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Since he already filed for re-election in 2028, which would put him at 101 when his term would end, it actually really does seem like Grassley plans on dying in office.

Yes. Look, the reality is this: People on here hate it when you say "AI goes rogue" because of what it suggests about the capabilities of AI. They're in denial and want to stay that way. But they can't admit that, so they've engineered a pretext about "holding AI companies accountable."
