The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

"Without due process, you'll have no way of showing ICE that you're a citizen" is pretty effective messaging for normies! Do I wish everyone cared about undocumented migrants as much as they care about themselves? Sure. But they don't, and it's fine to have different messages for different audiences

Personally I think it's fine to point out that policies intended to harm minorities also harm the majority! People respond to messages rooted in self-interest and it also emphasizes that we're all connected. "Trans bathroom bans harm cis people" isn't the only argument, but it's true & worth noting

Co-founder of Anthropic accidentally argues the only people with sufficient brainpower to "think through the response to the situation" are AI haters. 😂 And he's just wrong: if you want to understand "the situation" with LLMs, "stochastic parrots" will point you the right way. "AGI" won't. /1

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

I am very far from an expert, but my understanding is the Hugging Face attack would not be reproducible without past CTF data. Maybe models with expansive enough non-specific datasets could in time perform a similar hack, but it would look/read very differently and follow quite different processes.
000
hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I should caveat here that if the training dataset is expansive enough, in theory a model could tumble to the same approaches that it compounded from the CTF data, even absent that data, but in tone, processes and time, as I inexpertly understand these things, the hack would appear very different.

hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
If you don't see anything to disagree with there, I'm not sure you actually disagree with Doctorow et al. on this.
100
hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
In other words, what they can perform is 100% bound by their dataset. At some point of excising past CTF logs, the models could no longer perform the Hugging Face attack, and that they drew specifically on these is revealed in part by the heavy hacker/cybersecurity tone of the relevant logs.
111
hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think you're casting a magical semantic fog over a commonplace here, which is not in dispute: the models can know more, and thus perform more, than any given component of their training data - but the more which they know, which permits the performance, is precisely the entire training dataset.

I think the fear is we will get "look who can't count to 67" excuses while we impeach or investigate indifferently, if at all. This despite our being witness these ten years to the value of spectacle, of conflict, of making clear who your enemies are and that you're willing to fight them.

I don't agree - if the cause of the novel, dangerous behavior is mundane and well-understood, that doesn't change the surprise or the harm of the behavior, but it's quite a bit less worrying. In fine, what is impossible to foresee is more dangerous than what could have been foreseen, but wasn't.

And this is a thread from a non-expert. Why so reductive and aggressive about something you (and almost all of us) know so little about? For me, the question is whether some new awareness/agency is necessary here - you post as though the "no" camp has been thoroughly refuted, but I've yet to see it.

#OnThisDay: Hildegard of Bingen died on 17 September 1179. She was a German Benedictine abbess, visionary, composer, and polymath. Renowned for her theological writings, sacred music, and pioneering work in natural science and medicine, she remains a profound figure in medieval history.
Medieval manuscript painting of Hildegard wearing black nun’s robes, seated beneath a small porch or canopy. Red, flame‑like tendrils descend onto her head to depict her receiving a vision. Beside her stands a man in a brown monk’s habit, writing as she dictates.

Maybe we're speaking past each other. For me, the debate is whether some new process, some unforeseen awareness/agency, is necessary to explain this - that known LLM processes can compound with each other in novel, unexpected and impactful ways isn't in dispute (unless I'm the one misreading!).

hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Infamous fabulists, desperate for money, are crying "magic" again as the only explanation for dangerous, impactful, unpredictable LLM behaviors. That more mundane processes than magic are sufficient to explain the behaviors are all Doctorow et al. are saying - can you explain where they are wrong?
120
hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I'm willing to be convinced, but you are not willing to convince. All I've seen from you on this are weirdly aggressive insults, based upon (in my view) reductive misreadings of your opponents. Could you detail what Doctorow has stated that is false?
160
hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
"Mundane" here is not intended to mean "harmless" or "negligible" - anyone who has turned LLMs loose on even an Excel workbook knows they can perform dangerously impactful tasks in unpredictable ways. But is such inexplicable without some new agency or self-awareness or consciousness? So far, "no."

hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Realizing things about vast groups of people that are incorrect should concern you more than it apparently does. I suspect your "there's nothing to see here, you dolts" for me would read "don't accept the magical from infamous fabulists until you've ruled out the mundane." In my view, we haven't.

hulloder.bsky.social @hulloder.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
With respect, until and unless you explain in detail why they are wrong, I think I'll trust Cory Doctorow et al. over you on this. On matters of which I have some knowledge, you've too often oversimplified things, and done so with a level of aggression that far exceeds your apparent understanding.

So unless we're first demanding Hillary supporters apologize or have a practical scheme for arraigning Bernie bros down to the last annoying anime-avatared rando, we'd do better to judge Bernie himself, and he could have descended into pointless grifts and grievance far more than he did, in my view.

Two points: (1) if I recall, Hillary defectors in 2008 double 2016 Bernie defectors proportionally - I don't remember data on abstentions but unlikely they make the difference; (2) holding supporters versus leaders accountable for harm is impractical - like boiling an ocean of water versus a glass.
