ED-209, an imposing bipedal robot, lies prone, all the power and ingenuity of its gunmetal thews rendered helpless by a simple stairwell. Robocop, facing away from the camera, gazes up at his fearsome foe impassively, front-lit, dominating the frame. The warm skintone of Peter Weller's exposed jaw, barely visible, stands out: a warm gleam of humanity in an otherwise cold, grey, and dystopic world.

Nobody listens...
The Civ II military advisor, resplendent in his lycra red tee and bedsheet toga, who knows nothing of infinite city sprawl and would phalanxmaxx our people into penury and an obscure collective grave.

Witness me....
An image depicting the cover of the Economist in late 2024. A roll of $100s bound by an impractically large and improbably G-force resistant rubber band ascends into the troposphere on a jet of blue propulsive flame. The face of Ben Franklin gazes on impassively. Caption: "The Envy of the World | America's Economy: A Special Report"

Thinking I'm not the first, but....
David Lynch as Gordon Cole in the third season of Twin Peaks, his moral sense as heightened and inflexible as his pompadour, is captioned stating "Fix your hearts or die." In context, this is referencing his support for transgender chief of staff Denise Bryson, but is applicable to many in these times.

Huh.
A mysterious, blond, and improbably rasterized figure glowers over the bilious green of the reflecting pool. Though obscure to some, his intent for the waters therein seems no less ill than his jestercore sartorial choices.

Not around for much time, but the coolness and badassery he packed into it could fill three films, and made a huge impact on zygote me. Also, Woody Strode just rules.
A sepia-toned photograph captures Woody Strode portraying Draba, the indomitable gladiator from the film Spartacus (1960) whose defiance and death kicks off the slave rebellion. Draba is center frame, all class, displaying a physique to shame a demigod, in the midst of a weighted pull up. An anachronistically-pomaded Kirk Douglas scowls appreciatively in the background.

Still looking to heal this wound from when I was a zygote... 🙃
An image of the box art from the 90s space colony management sim Outpost. Pride in its "Multimedia CD" badge, false witness in its review blurb, its evasions and lies sit atop an exquisite depiction of a thriving, futuristic space colony. The scene is replete with the hot pinks and blues of a sick Surf Rags wallet, or the raddest of trapper keeper folders. Sadly, its promises were as thin and insubstantial as the ghostly wireframe HUD overlay...

I know where I'd place the stereotypical engineer (#notallengineers) in Hammerstein's taxonomy for officers. (Taking "stupid" to mean "incurious," maybe):
I distinguish four types. There are clever, hardworking, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and hardworking; their place is the General Staff. The next ones are stupid and lazy; they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the mental clarity and strength of nerve necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is both stupid and hardworking; he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always only cause damage.

Same.
A screenshot of the 1988 Zelda II reskin The Battle of Olympus. Orpheus stands center-frame. His shield, muscle cuirass, and laurel wreath are shaded an heroic teal. His haters are certainly his satyrs, who approach from the east. Given the declined state of his health bar, he unfortunately is unable to say, with justice, that he gives not a fig for them.

In the US, for me there's no better exception for rule-proving that dearth than... Abundance. I don't doubt the sincerity of the authors, and I know it only through reviews, interviews, etc., but it seems to me an awkward, dispiriting sprawl across the narrative frames of our enemies. Cf. Grant:
Oh, I am heartily tired of hearing about what Lee is going to do. Some of you always seem to think he is suddenly going to turn a double somersault, and land in our rear and on both of our flanks at the same time. Go back to your command, and try to think what we are going to do ourselves, instead of what Lee is going to do.

What the-
A detail of a photograph, zoomed grainier than state fair crop art, depicting Senator Chris Van Hollen and Kilmar Abrego Garcia seated at an outdoor table. The letters "M E N S C H" in white Impact font have been crudely MSPainted onto the senator's knuckles. Two left-out waters frame the senator's hand, a globeted absurdity. Should we become as ICEless, it will be in part to the courage, decency, and humanity on display herein. Thank you, Senator.

Kind of cheating as you could do the whole supporting cast:
A scene from Lion in Winter, the cold stone interior of Chinon castle. A young Timothy Dalton, enrobed in ermine, enacts a smirking Philip Augustus of France. In the background, Nigel Terry's Prince John is having a characteristically undignified gawp at a big Xmas tree.

"If you see this, quote with a title screen that’s iconic to you."
Title screen of the 1988 NES classic Faxanadu. You see a bordered scene of the world tree at night, lit by a waxing crescent moon. The towers of the elf city Eolis cluster at its roots, while another settlement lies suspended midway up its trunk. In the low fidelity of expertly dithered NES reds, browns and yellows, the latter seems almost to be anchored on the title itself, which is depicted in a bold and swelling calligraphic style, its serifs sharp as sabres. START or CONTINUE (if you remember your mantra).

The ravages of time...
Two dark eyes pierce you, bracketed by a fuligin beret and brown Van Dyke beard. Bright rodential teeth bite out an intelligence briefing on GDI positions. Satellite surveillance feed top left; badass scorpion tail jacket patch you always knew you needed bottom right: you have your orders.

With the right beans and grind, while it's not true espresso the humble Moka pot is the best economical option for home imo. 75% of Italians can't be wrong. Also:
Under the gaze of respectful mourners, a priest enrobed in purple pendulates his censer over an oversized Moka pot, the funerary urn of Renato Bialetti.

Loving the new Lincoln Bedroom.
More pit than room, its walls sicklied over with a lurid green, its floor spotless and shining and black as a heart plug, this Giedi Prime interior is illuminated by the caged glare of a large red industrial lamp. In the center, a fat old autocrat is attended by his slavish observants. Fear of his whims, his caprices and cruelties, are the card and carrier of their loyalty, and may be read in every face but his.

Snorri deleted my last review. Woke pablum for völva lovers. Your all-powerful scribe who ate 60 Hel dragons gets basically softlocked unless you (1) join Eyepatch and Lefty's ADA squad of losers and (2) rescue the Devs' annoying twink from Niflheim. 0/10
Title screen of the 1992 classic Rogue-like Ragnarok/Valhalla, depicting the rainbow bridge of Bifrost arcing from the foreground to a middle-distance Asgard.

Empiricism is subordinate to our larger lib pretension: that we actually live our stated values. To those who live by some "natural" moral or social hierarchy, by choice or perforce, this consistency is impossible and so of course we seem like bloodless, insufferable scolds to them. JSM had it:

An image of the 1995 rasterized prophecy Chrono Trigger: specifically the end message from using the Enertron, a medbed of sorts from the future. Only 275 years to go; not sure we're on track for such a classy dystopia tbh
