There's a lot of hurt to go around and people who feel powerless, so they find the one chance they have to be the 'bully' without guilt and they take it by the horns and run with it. It's deeply unfortunate, because trying to change mindsets like that becomes associated with blind defense.

I say this as a victim myself, People need to get off their fucking high horses immediately. Yes what he did was awful and reprehensible. But he is not uniquely evil for it. He's a human being. So was my abuser. The victim gets to decide how this is handled, and she clearly didn't want this.

Reading the comments I feel is very revealing of how many leftists deep down do believe in punitive justice. We ask for apologies we would never accept, and accountability we don't believe is possible. There's this belief in acts that are so unredeemable that they permanently stain the soul.

Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words
"Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn't get past his public facing, "I don't take sides."
