Toto releases “Hold the Line” 48 years ago tonight. “.. When I was in high school, all of a sudden the phone started ringing off the hook,” said David Paich. “I had 3 girls all call at the same time, all the lights were flashing. I was kind of juggling girlfriends, and that's how that came about."

It may be true that elections are essentially popularity contests. Unfortunately, many people's only frame of reference for that is high school, where associating with unpopular groups can mean social suicide. Thus, that camp's idea of a winning political strategy often amounts to "avoiding cooties"

There is a fatalistic sort of superiority complex in a lot of the "blue no matter who" crowd. "We're SO good, yet we are SO outnumbered by Bad People, we are beset on all sides, we simply have no choice but to make concessions to all the awful people who surround us, it is SO hard being SO good"

I said it when the Redstones owned the company, and I'm still saying now the Ellisons own the company. Paramount has no idea what they have access to, and their massive music library (which includes Solid Gold, Soul Train, and the MTV, VH1, CMT & BET libraries) is vastly wasted and unused by them.

A huge core belief of the right is that bad things only happen to Bad People who DESERVE them, aka the just-world fallacy. If you want to control what happens to you, all you have to do is fix your own behavior to be Good. Nothing about a rigged system has to change, if YOU'RE the one with the power

LA drivers are only safe in bumper to bumper traffic. They're not used to open lanes (they drive 120 mph an hour when there's no traffic directly in front of them, even if a bottleneck is coming up in less than a mile) and oil absorbs into the asphalt and all comes to the surface when it rains.

For decades, L.A. people always had a "yeah, but it's a dry heat," chambered as one of our defenses for living here. Now, the heat is wet, fire season is all year round, and the industry that brought many of us here is dead. But at least it's ranked in the top 10 most expensive cities in the world.
