Sensible move, although this might alienate the ethnic Russian minorities more, which also contributes to the effectiveness of the Russian misinformation machine as we show in this paper tinyurl.com/BalticsLarre...

Crucially, we show when foreign propaganda appears most consequential: where institutional trust is low and integration weaker. Effects are strongest among cohorts partly schooled under Soviet rule, and we find no comparable pattern in Estonia or Lithuania.

Our design exploits two disruptions to Western vaccines that Russian state-backed media used to promote Sputnik V and attack Western institutions. After each, traffic shifted toward pro-Kremlin outlets and vaccination fell more where the ethnic Russian share was larger.

Now that I have more time, a bit more on the paper... We study when Russian state-sponsored misinformation/propaganda changes not just beliefs, but consequential behavior. We focus on Russian-speaking minorities in Latvia during the COVID vaccine rollout.

#VendrediLecture 📚 How can parties expand their volunteer base? Drawing from field experiments in 🇳🇱, @jonnekamphorst.bsky.social & @hlarreguy.bsky.social show personal calls are effective, in particular to recruit younger members. Open Acess in @polanalysis.bsky.social: doi.org/10.1017/pan....
Get Out the Volunteer: Encouraging Diverse Political Party Activism

Published online by Cambridge University Press: 09 September 2026

Abstract

Political parties in advanced democracies face a dual challenge: fewer citizens are willing to volunteer, and those who remain active are disproportionately older and male. This is troubling given the central role that volunteers play in campaigns and party processes. Whether party leaders can recruit a larger and more diverse activist base remains an open question. We partnered with a major party in the Netherlands and conducted two field experiments before the 2021 general and 2022 municipal elections, targeting over 35,000 party members. The party randomized whether members received a personal call, an email or both. Results show that calls—where members could voice their opinions—increased volunteer sign-up rates (83% in Study 1 and 361% in Study 2), especially among younger members. By contrast, emails had no effect. These findings clarify mixed evidence in the literature, suggesting that voice opportunities are key to expanding and diversifying the activist base.

Our contribution: social media does not have a single effect on polarization. Its political consequences depend on who is speaking, whose messages are amplified, and how diverse users’ networks are—helping reconcile seemingly conflicting findings in the social media literature.

What matters is not simply access to social media, but the political exposure it creates. We find that gains from polarizing rhetoric are concentrated where online networks amplify one political voice—and weaken where networks expose voters to more diverse views.

I truly wonder if there is an experiment behind this, this is a joke, or there is an increasingly complete lack of appreciation for our time. They ask to review a book of 350 pages within 15 days for 50 points (worthless to me).

💥 Our results indicate that after the sudden increase in dissent, municipalities with a stronger militia presence experienced more repression events and less land redistribution than areas with weaker or no militia presence.

🧩 We develop a model in which an autocrat’s localized response to dissent depends on incomplete information about the geography of people’s discontent and the government’s coercive capacity, a feature that authoritarian governments often inherit from the past.

🗺️ In contrast, we argue that subnational differences in the inherited coercive capacity of the regime are a central—yet underexplored—determinant of whether autocrats respond to local dissent with repression or redistribution, thereby preventing its escalation at the very early stages of uprisings.

👉While this trade-off is well documented, existing accounts often treat this strategic choice as uniform across space, attributing variation primarily to national-level factors, such as regime type or macroeconomic conditions.

🤔What could explain the subnational variation in authoritarian responses to local unrest? 📜 Authoritarian regimes commonly employ a mix of coercion and redistribution to maintain political control (Gandhi 2008; Albertus 2017).
