This is a pretty cool paper looking at how/when people attribute poor sleep to the moon/lunar phase. Lunar effects on sleep have been hanging around in the literature for a while without a putative mechanism, but maybe it is psychological rather than physiological. www.mdpi.com/2624-5175/8/...

We have a pool nestled amongst our backyard orchard, and a fridge with an ice maker on the door and a large-ish center island in the kitchen. But we’re still grateful we don’t live in an apartment the size of our current master bathroom + walk-in closet anymore. =UMC UC: what?!?

Is this translated from the original German? www.whitehouse.gov/releases/202...
Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller made clear there must be no retreat: “One of the hallmarks of left-wing violence and terrorism is its completely pre-textual and disingenuous appeal to civil liberties in an effort to shield its own violence… When the leftist — who does not believe in freedom, who does not believe in civil rights, who does not believe in any ordinary notion of justice — protests that we are violating his rights, understand the he is lying to try to persuade people who are not closely following the political scene that some injustice has perpetrated against him. We must stay the course and be completely unflinching in the pursuit of justice against these enemies of civilization.”

Thrilled this is out, led by former PD Cameron Ogg (now with her own lab at @rhodescollege.bsky.social!). It was a driven by a desire to see, in real-time, how LC activity/NE release influences downstream targets in behaving animals. SO hard to do, but Cameron did it! www.cell.com/cell-reports...

The sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus in the brainstem is a center for #sleep control. This study shows that GABAergic neurons in this region suppress wakefulness, and that perturbing their activity level can regulate sleep attacks in a mouse #narcolepsy model. 🧪 #AcademicSky plos.io/4pchrxE
An illustration of a proposed mechanism by which GABAergic neurons in the sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus (SLDGABA neurons) suppress wakefulness in healthy and narcoleptic animals. This schematic illustrates how the balance of wake-promoting signals from the lateral hypothalamus (LH) orexin (LHOX) neurons and wake-suppressive signals from the SLDGABA neurons may determine the changes in arousal states. In healthy mice (orexin+/+), the wake-promoting signal mediated by the LHOX neurons predominates over the wake-suppressive signal mediated by the SLDGABA neurons, generating a stable wakefulness. Conversely, in narcoleptic mice (orexin−/−), orexin-mediated wake-promoting signals are absent, allowing the SLDGABA neurons to produce a disproportionately strong suppression of wakefulness, resulting in wake instability seen as sleep attacks.

Ugh. The nylon replacements from Weber didn't work so I bought one of these. Not giving it back, this one works and I pay attention after cleaning to make sure there are no bristles on the grilling surfaces. Ridiculous: millions of these sold and like 3 people had someone incompetent use the grill.

The US capital was probably named for PIGEONS. 😲🐦 I'll explain & dive into some etymology. "Pigeon" is from Old French 'pijon', which is from Late Latin: 'pīpiō', an onomatopoeic term for a young chirping bird. The Latin version of "a peep-peep." But Romans had a /different/ name for pigeons.

"Lunar gravity predicts sleep timing" - bookmarking this lunar rhythms & sleep paper as interesting. It uses a 30-day rhythm but not the 28-day declination rhythm - a claim of "gravity" should probably use the 28-day one, but I think "phase" should follow 30? europepmc.org/article/med/...

When planting our garden, I sowed year-round wildflower varieties (here = Central Valley) so that bees in hive boxes in the orchards would know to visit anytime for food. Hoping that they'd also pollinate my fruit trees in the spring. Worked fine so far. This is a very cool visualization of that.
