Couldn’t agree more. Anyone who has grappled with assessment and assessment policy will recognise the challenges and errors made in the recent past. Post 2 is particularly resonating. The other challenge is trying to discuss these things with teams and SLT to move things along. Much resistance.

Teaching a child to read ensures they can participate in all life has to offer. Not being able to read well is a huge hindrance - imagine not being able to read the instructions on a medicine bottle, an email, a formal letter . . . Illiteracy is a solvable problem, with the will to do so.

Wonderful piece here. Wish my youngest had been given solid foundations from the get-go to build on. I wouldn’t have had to reteach fractions, percentages, ratio, equations etc endlessly as a non-specialist mum and he might have persevered with it instead of feeling so powerless.
