There's no bottom. You thought, Ford taking control of school boards was just some kind of budget thing? Seems it might be another attempt to help his developer friends.

Does $25 million even count as ultra rich, though? That's only 25 years if you spend $1 million per year.

I would probably just stop caring about what time of day I slept and woke up. So I guess I'd by a nice comfy bed, but frivolously.

Didn't seem weird to me at the time. I just wanted money, and didn't really think about all the ways that things could go wrong.

In retrospect, it was a super weird job. A bunch of teenagers show up in a parking lot. We all get into a stranger's van. He drives us to some neighbourhood and lets each of us off at different spots with a bucket of carnations.

The 2026 FIFA peace prize may turn out to be the only one. To sane people this just demonstrates the stupidity of the thing. To Trump, that would just make him an extra special boy.

I never new what that logo was about as a kid. Looking at it more closely now, it looks like a snake with ears wearing a maple leaf as a hat, and I will not be able to unsee that.

Related to the last two reposts, a family friend was killed by a motorist while out walking. My one sister sent me this today. My other sister remarked that there probably won't be any consequences for the driver. Victims are not a priority.

We understand that key personnel at Verdi Alliance may be high-level donors to Doug Ford’s party. CBC reporting based on publicly available records appears to show that five directors with Verdi Alliance donated over $12,000 to the Ontario PC Party between 2021-22.

But why do we need those incentives? Because we don't want invest in Canada to unless we're being coerced. Hell, our own national pension plan doesn't even have a good track record in that regard.

At a personal level, I don't fault anyone who is broke for not shopping at Roots. But not all of us are broke. Another aspect of it is where those of us with the wherewithal all to invest choose to invest. I've been hearing for years about incentivizing Canadians to invest in Canada.

RE 🇨🇦 @hewer-of-code.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
It wasn't clear from what I wrote, but I'm thinking about over the course of the last 30 years or more, and not just at a personal level. E.g. there's a 'funny because it's true' thing about how the easiest way to sell 5,000 units to a Canadian company is to sell 50,000 to a US company first.

I'm not in Barrie, but I'm on the Barrie line just south of Simcoe county, in a very PC riding. It recently had its service cut, and the remaining service has been noticeably worse. An absolute contradiction of getting people moving. Lots of things that money could be used for, including transit.

I hope all the Ford voters in Barrie and Niagara and Vaughn and Brampton can explain why spending $50M of their tax dollars to rip out bike lanes in Toronto is a good use of their cash. Are your kids class sizes that small? Your hospital waiting times so short? Nothing better to do with that $?

One time I was driving home from work and passed my usual gas station. For some reason, gas was about a nickel cheaper than the station across the road, and cheaper than it had been in a while. Consequently, the lineups were also much longer than usual, filling up the, nearly onto the street.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."
