It reminds me of the Cottingley Fairies hoax, a series of photographs made in 1917 and 1920 that supposedly were "proof of the existence of fairies". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of Sherlock Holmes fame, was convinced that they were totally real.
One of the first photographs taken by Elsie Wright in 1917.
It shows Frances Griffiths with the alleged fairies.

No, the Westerners who helped create Putin as he is today are the politicians who normalised him. Europe bought Russian oil and gas, sang alongside Russia at Eurovision, even went to Russia for the world cup- all whilst Putin murdered dissidents, invaded his neighbours and stole elections.

Owen is correct, but not in the way he thinks. The West did help create Putin. However, the Soviet apparatchiks and gangsters who run the country now didn't need any lessons from the West in corruption or chauvinism- these were already well established traditions of the Soviet regime.

What's typical of slopaganda images (and what distinguishes them in part from classic propaganda) is not only the ostensible photorealism, which is not meant to fool anyone, but also the abundance of symbols. These are hyperlegible images, filled to the edges with graffiti, flags, and other signs

In this respect, a #slopaganda image like this is a condensed version of a social media feed. It makes its point through redundancy. It's not only that AI models are trained on platform content; the visual worlds they generate are shaped by platform logics. This is what I call #PlatformRealism

This semiotic overabundance is in part an effect of how AI models are trained and optimized to match textual prompts. But it's also a worldbuilding technique. In slopaganda-world, every visible element has an unambiguous meaning, and they all reinforce each other, creating a kind of echo chamber

AI #slopaganda is not so much about fakes or disinformation. It's about aligning the world with your preformulated descriptions of it, making reality disappear behind its formulaic image, rendering visible all your fears at once in order to enjoy them more. It's a technology of fascist daydreaming
