90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Post something random or you’ll have an awful September
A book, simply titled, “BORAX”. The cover image is of a wooden scoop, overflowing with white crystals, set on a wooden ledge, with a background of leafy branches and sunlight. The book has a header which states it is part of a “BASIC KNOWLEDGE” series, and a footer paragraph which is in German (as is the rest of the book). Perplexingly, it was discovered in a pile of various popular fiction books in a holiday villa in Spain.

Some friends are teaching their baby ASL as an early bridge to speech and they made the mistake of teaching her “want” as a concept. Now she wanders around the house signing “want” all the time as an expression of unfocused desire. They fucked up and made the baby invent the opposite of Buddhism.

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

Gentle reminder for all that if you have books that are water damaged, crawling with bugs, physically broken, or giving you travel advice for a country that hasn’t existed since the 90s, you can safely throw them away, you don’t need to make them your local thrift store’s problem.

My immediate takeaway from #theodyssey is I need someone to do an edit like this one from “2012”, but instead of John Cusack narrowly escaping disasters, it’s 10 minutes of Matt Damon fleeing from a cavalcade of monstrosities and getting the hell back on his boat youtu.be/lY-gG9ubdtw?...

Expand the picture, the thumbnail cuts out all the best parts.
Post says "Happy Birthday to Edgar Allen Poe and Dolly Parton!" With pictures of both. First repost says to the tune of 9 to 5:
Work 9 to 9
For a man whose eye is creepy
That's why I decide
To assault him when he's sleepy
But his heart still beats
In the floorboards where I set it
It's enough to drive me
Crazy if I let it!
First reply is the meme of Edgar Allen Poe looking suspiciously at a piece of paper.
Second reply is: No no that's a bop, I love it.
And third reply is: "Woman," cried I, somewhat tearsome,
"Who are you to stand so fearsome,
With your wavy locks of auburn hair and eyes of emerald green?"
