And since cars are such enormous, heavy machines, even that they’re better than cars, they are still terrible in terms of resource consumption, efficiency, mining, and climate. We need drastic reductions, not moderate reductions. medium.com/@terenig/wil...

Will electric cars save the climate? That’s the wrong question.
The problem isn’t our carbon footprint, it’s our civilization’s footprint.

And since shifting away from cars is super politically difficult, politicians, already greased with car money, gives them a VERY easy out in terms of appearance of climate action: EVs! One proof? E-bike subsidies, or the almost complete lack thereof.

Does that include the manufacturing of the car? In an ideal world, if our politics was pure, yes, we’d reduce car dependency then use electric cars for where we can’t. But when politics is mired in money, big auto has enormous influence.

It’s not just about banning cars on “pedestrian streets” — it’s about filling the space usually surrendered to cars with magnetic people-places FULL of things that attract people & make them want to stay. Vancouver hasn’t been great at such transformations. The World Cup NEEDS to be a turning point.
Granvilles Street in downtown Vancouver, 5 blocks pedestrianized and turned into a people place for the World Cup. Street filled with people, restaurant patios showing the games, activities, art, photo stations etc.Granville pedestrian street block end with sign saying “road closed” with symbols saying pedestrians and bikes allowed.Large letters spelling GOAL filled with people’s signatures and signs, flags etc from around the world.Kids playing Foosball on Granville Street

Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam." This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s. Many of the cities we admire made better choices regarding cars in the past. and are still making better choices today. Better choices instead of excuses.

Most dismaying is the lack of imagination. How sad to equate freedom for sitting alone in a private, movable metal cell—a.k.a. car—and then spend most time in a long row of these cells—a.k.a. traffic jam? And how many people r even truly noticing the few genuine freedoms that car can actually offer?

You right dear Brent! The next mayoral election in Paris will be a choice between returning to the past, a city for cars, lies and empty gestures, Dati/Trump-style populism, or continuing to move forward into the 21st century for a happy proximity city, human centric, liveable and more peaceful.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

How do we protect millions from the escalating threat of extreme heat? The answer lies within our cities: from cool roofs and green infrastructure to innovative insurance schemes, they are developing solutions.
A screenshot of a Bloomberg UK news article with the headline "INDIA'S BOILING POINT". The accompanying photo shows a crowded hospital ward where a woman uses a hand fan to cool a patient lying in bed. The sub-headline reads, "Millions in the country are confronting a terrifying reality: When sweat can't evaporate, heat kills."

On one hand, reducing car use reduces urban pollution. But on the other, everyone likes it and cities become more livable
Average nitrogen dioxide concentration in Paris has fallen significantlyHer proposals have faced pushback — from right-leaning politicians, a car owners’ association and suburban commuters, who say that targeting cars makes their lives more difficult.

But last month, Parisians voted in a referendum to turn an additional 500 streets over to pedestrians. A year earlier, Paris had moved to sharply increase parking fees for SUVs, forcing drivers to pay three times more than they would for smaller cars. The city has also turned a bank of the Seine from a busy artery into a pedestrian zone and banned most car traffic from the shopping boulevard of Rue de Rivoli.

Carlos Moreno, a professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and a former adviser to the city, said the French capital has developed “an urban policy based on well-being.”
