It’s not just about banning cars on “pedestrian streets” — it’s about filling the space usually surrendered to cars with magnetic people-places FULL of things that attract people & make them want to stay. Vancouver hasn’t been great at such transformations. The World Cup NEEDS to be a turning point.
Granvilles Street in downtown Vancouver, 5 blocks pedestrianized and turned into a people place for the World Cup. Street filled with people, restaurant patios showing the games, activities, art, photo stations etc.Granville pedestrian street block end with sign saying “road closed” with symbols saying pedestrians and bikes allowed.Large letters spelling GOAL filled with people’s signatures and signs, flags etc from around the world.Kids playing Foosball on Granville Street

The limits our current system imposes on people in the world of work are a shame.
If you want a career pursuing any form of value other than monetary value - if you want to work in journalism, and pursue truth, or in the arts, and pursue beauty, or in some charity or international NGO or the UN, and pursue social justice, well, even assuming you can acquire the requisite degrees, for the first few years they won’t even pay you.

So you’re supposed to live in New York or some other expensive city on no money for a few years after graduation. Who else can do that except children of the elite?"*

From Cities Made Differently. By David Graeber and @nikadubrovsky.bsky.social
Many European cities such as Manchester, Vienna, Cologne and Florence take their layout from Roman Military camps, which were colonial outposts of the Empire.

One can think about Military towns like a well designed game with unchangeable rules. The streets, houses, public spaces are filled with people in uniform, leading a predeterminded life, under clear laws and control of a single will. This game may enthuse some participants but there are always going to be others who want to play a different game. For them, Imperia asserting themselves as the sole rule makers have always been a problem, to say the least.
