Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

This is why I push so harshly against calling games slop or whatever outside of the AI context because I think people adopt terms like that so readily and let it completely poison their ability to engage with anything. You're not a secondary or a larper or whatever if you try getting into something.

I say this as a joke but honestly if, when playing a video game, you can lose and: - not get frustrated or annoyed - think about what happened and examine the elements in play - reconsider your choices regularly then you'll be well on your way to overcoming a lot of difficult gaming challenges

I still think about the Soviet false alarm incident in Sep 26, 1983, where we were one ordinary person's decision away from a nuclear war, only averted because he (correctly) determined his equipment was hallucinating, and having computer systems now that are described in the same fashion.

You know in hindsight NFTs feel quaint for being "bad art tied to the worst future where you're constantly being spied upon because everything is tracking you online" because AI is all that but a thousand times worse. It's like Dragon Quest when you defeat the final boss and he turns into a dragon

Foxes In Love @foxes-in-love.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue approaches Green with a question.
Blue: Hey can you help me make up my mind about something?

Green sits calmly and listens as Blue goes on, ponderously tapping his chin with the tip of his tail.
Blue: Okay, so I've got three options- no, wait, the second option makes no sense for this.

Green sits still while Blue goes on, looking over his shoulder to the direction he came from.
Blue: And now that I think about it, the third one is the same as the fist, but worse.

Satisfied with this talk, Blue carries on, returning the way he had come. Green has not moved at all.
Blue: The first it is, then.
Green: Glad to help.

Coming up with episode titles for #BeanAndNothingness has been pretty fun; I've been able to come up with some nice double-meaning titles like "Facade" or "Mask" that both pertain to transformation but also a more structural or functional aspect.

The fact that you can make a Turing machine (at stupidly inefficient cost) in a videogame has exactly the same metaphysical implications for the nature of consciousness as the fact that you can assemble a functioning human being from protons, neutrons, and electrons: nothing.

im pretty far on the anti-AI and LLM end of the spectrum, but you have to constantly think critically and reassert your reasons *why* you oppose it, otherwise you end up taking positions like "it's good to manually complete tasks which could be automated and doing avoidable work is virtuous"

Got a little angry at the end of my latest blog post. Software ate the world, and then finance ate the software industry, and now here we are. davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/new-post-6...
One final thought.... zoom out far enough, and the history of the digital future looks something like this:
First, Silicon Valley built hardware that got smaller and faster and cheaper and better.
Then, Silicon Valley built software that became the mediating layer of the global economy.
And then, the finance industry ate the software industry. Every tech company today is a finance company.
Software ate the world, and then finance ate software, and now here we are.
It isn't quite as simple as "after the Great Financial Crisis, all the finance guys moved to Silicon Valley so they could keep doing the same bullshit without all the regulatory scrutiny." But that's a close-enough approximation of recent history.
