I am thrilled to share the newest paper from our lab "Antigenic and structural analysis of the influenza hemagglutinin lateral patch"! The lateral patch is an often overlooked conserved epitope. Here, we analyzed antigenic evolution over time and across distinct animal-derived H1Nx viruses.

Abstract. The 2022 panzootic of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) viruses has led to unprecedented transmission to multiple mammalian species.

What causes viral transmission bottlenecks? This study uses barcoded virions to show that in the case of #influenza A #virus, early within-host replication dynamics (rather than a reduced inoculum population) drive loss of diversity during transmission @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4ngicDK
Population diversity declines between inoculated and exposed guinea pigs. Viral titers in nasal lavage samples are indicated by the overall height of the bar. Red lines show LOD (50 PFU/mL). Colors within the bars represent unique barcodes, and the height of each color indicates barcode frequency within the sample. Plots for individual animals are paired with those of their cage mate. Representative pairs for direct contact (top half) and aerosol (bottom half) exposure are shown from three experimental replicates. Guinea pig ID numbers are shown in the upper right corner of each plot.

I received a surprising and disturbing request from NIH on Friday. They wrote to cancel a subaward to Hong Kong on one of my grants. (This was disturbing but not surprising.) They also ordered us not to interact with our collaborators in Hong Kong on any work under the award:
Screenshot of email stating "The subaward and the associated amounts listed above will need to be removed from the current and future year awards, and any other amounts budgeted for activities related to the Hong Kong research must also be removed. No rebudgeting of these funds is permitted, and no involvement or collaboration with researchers in Hong Kong or China is permitted in connection with the activities of this award, regardless of whether any funds are transferred," with the "no involvement" clause highlighted.

Not an auspicious date: 1 year ago today #USDA confirmed #H5N1 #birdflu in dairy cows in Texas, a first. Since then nearly 1000 infected herds have been confirmed; lord knows how many others missed detection. 70 human cases were confirmed in the past year; again the true number is likely higher.
