It helps to understand America as a casino you’re trapped in: no windows to another future, no concept of time apart from the casino itself, designed to wear you down. Neon lights and beeps and boops, every machine dressed up as some familiar IP, all doing the same thing: slowly bleeding you dry.

I don't agree with his claim, but his argument is that to do so would be to form a cartel and would violate antitrust laws.

This isn't a comment about the tax, just saying that Coal Creek Pkwy is an important road to have. I'm still pro public transit, I promise I'm not 100% suburb-brained yet! (@dbc.bsky.social)

I live ~2 miles from this spot. I agree it's bigger than it needs to be 99% of the time, but it's the only real N/S road besides 405 here. If 405 is blocked/closed, we need to have some kind of alternative

The thing about Seattle is we don't compare ourselves to other cities in this tire fire of a country. We just don't care. We compare ourselves mainly to our expectations of what this city should be. Those expectations are rightly high. If we're comparing ourselves to any other city, it's in Europe.

Contrived quote skeet not to plug my huge discography, but to read Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, which inspired a lot of the music on that release, especially while it's still in print:
powells.com
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Deluxe Edition 1 | Powell's Books
Don't miss this moving, critically acclaimed classic manga (which inspired the anime) about an android running a coffee shop in a slowly dying Japan--published in English for the first time in oversized omnibus editions Set in the future after an environmental catastrophe, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (also known as Yokohama Shopping Log) centers on the simple life of Alpha, an android who runs a small coffee shop in coastal Japan. Alpha stands witness to chronicle the end of humanity's days with coffee, a slice of watermelon, and the sound of her moon guitar backed by distant seagulls. Quiet and bittersweet, this tale is about the melancholy beauty that can be found even as the end approaches. Winner of the Seiun science fiction award for Best Manga, this beloved series launched in the mid 1990s and ran for 14 volumes, inspiring anime and garnering critical acclaim. Seven Seas is proud to present this series in English for the first time, with the entire story combined into an oversized five-volume set.

Thanks for the clarification. I have to wonder if that stat is very meaningful (in theory, it could simply mean that older people flip houses more frequently than they used to), but it definitely is the kind of thing that feels "off" when you hear it

Parking in this city is a joke!!
I went to the Ballard Farmers market today and had to circle the blocks to find a spot. Ended up having to park my bike a block away and walk to the market instead of usually being able to park right at the entrance. This city needs to add more bike racks! No new apartment buildings if it doesn't include bike parking!

I remember when Trump was in the news all the time talking about Obama being a secret Kenyan, then he stopped talking about it and I thought "thank god, we don't have to hear from that guy ever again." And then the universe conspired to make that the thing I have been the wrongest about in my life.

I knew this as a Bil Keane (the Family Circus cartoonist) bit: www.huffpost.com/entry/the-co...
Excerpt of an article explaining that:
at the 1992 NCS meeting in Washington, D.C., Bil joked that when attendees had the chance to meet (the first) President Bush, he filled out a form that included the boilerplate question about whether he advocated the overthrow of the U.S. government by force or violence. "I put down violence," deadpanned Keane.

To "yes, and" this thread: there is a weird economic illiteracy in both parties right now. It's not just "crazy leftists don't know about economics". Look at tariffs for a case of the political right being unwilling to accept basic supply/demand/price relationships.

Everything You Need to Know About the 2 Line Crosslake Connection
Today's events celebrating the region's newest light rail connection start at 9am, with the first train across I-90 taking off shortly after 10am. As the only light rail line to cross a floating bridge anywhere in the world, the full 2 Line is a major achievement.

A friend (half-jokingly) pointed out that motorcycles should pay even more for registration because eventually the state will have to pay somebody to come scrape me off the road, but as far as weight goes: this system doesn't make much sense.

Greg Bartell @gregbartell.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I just renewed my tabs for my motorcycle. Fully loaded with gas and me and all my gear, we're talking maybe 525 or 550lbs. WA wants $35 for my vehicle's weight. I just pulled the registration of one of my trucks at work. 14,700lbs unloaded, up to 26,000 loaded. $209 for its weight.
Road damage chart showing that an 18,000lb vehicle does approximately infinity times more road damage than a 350lb vehicle.

Putting some spare change on the Super Bowl is one thing. But every day there's a story about some player throwing because his buddy is betting the under. Crowds where everybody is glued to their phone, checking their parlays. Lives destroyed from addictive apps. All in the service of what, exactly?

I cheered the legalization of sports gambling and changed my mind on it very quickly. The speed with which this industry has managed to corrode so many aspects of society is truly impressive. Even in places like WA that haven't legalized these sportsbooks, it's impossible to ignore their impact.

I really don't understand the knee jerk resistance to tall buildings. A bunch of skyscrapers is a sign of success, that your town has become a real city. A bunch of 5-over-1s makes you feel like you're at Totem Lake.

Asking who is better is a question so dumb it's nearly suicidal. Who is better at being human? We are. If it could be shown someone would be a "better" parent to your child, would you think your child should be taken away? I am better at being me than AI, every time.
