The playbook system makes it easy to fit to a specific setting, as it's not just the stats, it's also the goals and tropes. You can take a 5e class and tweak it to fit the source material, but the more different the source is from 5e expectations the more work you have. Playbooks are easier.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

In my superhero RPG, which is Bronze Age-flavored except where Silver Age flavor slips in, because I am an old, nominative determinism is of course powerful. Elaine Rupton is the supervillain Eruption, predictably. I learned from the best writers.

first guy: I specifically want it to be about a boy learning to use magic
second guy: [holds up A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA]

I was reviewing an old superhero RPG adventure I wrote called "Space Nazis in Space" -- I know what my players want, and they get it -- and it included an offhand reference to a collective of heroes and agents who fought for the Allies in WWII Europe.

The thing about losing the good ones like Dolly is that it means that the responsibility for being a good one falls on us. But it always has anyway.

Does the "mono-" in "monograph" refer to "one topic or subject", "one volume", or "one author"? I am not an academic, so I only intersect with the term peripherally.

John Byrne is a reactionary old jerkface with bad opinions about vulnerable people, and the fact that he did some comics that were important to you when you were a kid doesn't change that now.

My wife has got some sort of heist movie on, and there was a quick montage of Lichtenstein pieces, and I delivered my 30-second rant on why I hate Roy Lichtenstein. And I realized something. Roy Lichtenstein was AI before AI. What's wrong with Lichtenstein is what's wrong with AI.

This is not a problem that gets solved by rugged individualism. You cannot personal-responsibility your way out of it. It cannot be biohacked at home. It requires a coordinated and ongoing effort by multiple governments. The USDA is the main chunk of the US government that works on it.

If your brain doesn't make the chemicals it needs, there is nothing shameful or dependent on getting those chemicals from a doctor. Saying elsewise is saying that glasses, shoes, and clothing are all shameful, as our bodies are not naturally equipped to walk on broken glass without injury.

TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON

This cartoon has six panels. A caption at the top says "History, Rhyming."

PANEL 1

A close up of someone's hand lying limply on the ground, in sepia tones.

CAPTION: August 20, 1965: Civil rights activist Jonathan Daniels put himself between a deputy sheriff and the black teen the deputy was attacking. The deputy shot Daniels to death.

PANEL 2

A close up of a gloved hand lying limply on snowy pavement, a cell phone lying nearby. Drawn in blue tones.

CAPTION: January 24 2026: Anti-fascist activist Alex Pretti put himself between border protection agents and the woman the agents were attacking. The agents shot Pretti to death.

PANEL 3

This panel is divided in two, sepia on the left and blues on the right. On the sepia side, a man inn a suit sneers. On the right side, a man in a border patrol uniform sneers.

BOTH (in unison): He was intended to commit a massacre!

CAPTION (sepia side): Arthur Gamble: Corrupt prosecutor who threw the case.

CAPTION (blue side): Gregory Bovino: Border Patrol Commander.

PANEL 4

Another panel divided into sepia and blue sides. On the sepia side is a cheerful middle-aged man in a suit. On the right side are two masked Border Patrol agents.

ALL THREE (unison): I was in fear for my life!

CAPTION (sepia side): Tom Coleman, Daniels' murderer.

CAPTION (blue side): Jesus Ochoa and Raymundo Gutierrez, Pretti's murderers.

PANEL 5

On the sepia side, three people with 1960s haircuts are angrily yelling. On the blue side, same thing except with current-day hair and clothes.

ALL (unison): If he hadn't put himself where he didn't belong he'd still be alive! Cops have to make split-second judgements! Law! Order! Bark bark bark bark woof!

CAPTION: Boot-licking stooges.

PANEL 6

In a clearing, surrounded by grass, trees, and shrubs, two men talk to each other. One, wearing a clerical collar, is "Jonathan Daniels, 1939-1965." The other, wearing a winter jacket and baggy jeans, is "Alex Pretti, 1989-2026."

The Murderbot Diaries are a good example of cyberpunk. Not just for the surface features (evil corporations run everything, cybernetics, implant-based hacking, drones) but also thematically (what does it mean to be human when you're not entirely organic, resisting an unbeatable oppressor, etc.).

Panel from a 1922 installment of the strip "In Rabbitboro". A rabbit policeman is leading a rabbit preacher into the jail cell of a rabbit hobo. Policeman: Parson Popeye, there's tha guy that lifted yer silver and things.

Thematically speaking, the most important thing Terry Pratchett taught me was the concept of militant decency. The idea that you can look at the world and its flaws and its injustices and its cruelties and get deeply, intensely angry, and that you can turn that into energy for doing the right thing and making the world a better place. He taught me that the anger itself is not the part! should be fighting. Nobody in my life ever said that before.
