Will this year's record-shattering El Niño event be the strongest in a millennium? In a new piece over at The Climate Brink I review the paleoclimate literature from tree rings and corals and argue that may well turn out to be the case:
theclimatebrink.com
The strongest El Niño in a thousand years?
Tree rings and corals both put the biggest modern El Niños at or near the top of the past millennium, and this year’s event is on track to land well above them.

Anomalies are computed relative to a 1991-2020 baseline using ERA5 data. The second graph is monthly carbon dioxide abundance. The CO2 graph is the Keeling Curve. Current levels are 428 ppm. The third graph is monthly global methane abundance. Current levels are 1939 ppb. The fourth graph is monthly global nitrous oxide abundance. Current levels are 340 ppb. The three greenhouse gases show seasonal cycles and long-term increasing trends using data from NOAA GML. The global mean surface temperature anomaly record also exhibits decadal variability and a long-term increasing trend. What is the report?
In the first report of its kind, the UK’s spy chiefs set out stark warnings of the catastrophic risks to the UK from the collapse of vital ecosystems around the world, driven by the climate crisis and our failures to protect nature. The Guardian has seen part of the report and has spoken to a large number of people familiar with its contents, which warn of food shortages, conflicts, mass migration and other threats to the UK’s national security, including going as far as the risk of nuclear war or the breakdown of society. These threats are not regarded as some far-off or remote contingency: disastrous impacts, for instance on the UK’s food supply, could be expected as soon as 2030, it warns.
