I just checked, I must have created the Lean Zulip 8 years ago on Feb 26 after we had outgrown Gitter. More than 15,000 other users have since followed. I'm very happy to see them make this step and get Jeremy Avigad and other great people on board.

Happy we were able to make this happen for Zulip. This also marks a big change for me — excited about the work to be done.

people were rightly scandalized by that a freelancer for the Chicago Sun-Times published a list of non-existent books in their summer reading list, but it's actually much worse to falsely attribute made-up quotes to a political leader in one of the most widely-read papers on the planet.

personally I think it's a very big deal that the Canada bureau chief for the @nytimes.com — certainly one of the highest-paid journalists in the country — asked an unspecified "AI tool" what Poilievre said & published its AI-hallucinated quotes in her reporting.
Editors’ Note: May 1, 2026
This article was updated after The Times learned that a remark attributed to Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, was in fact an A.I.-generated summary of his views about Canadian politics that A.I. rendered as a quotation. The reporter should have checked the accuracy of what the A.I. tool returned. The article now accurately quotes from a speech delivered by Mr. Poilievre in April. He said, “My personal opinion is that when a member of Parliament goes back on the word they made to their constituents and switches parties, constituents should be able to petition to throw them out and have a byelection. That would put the people back in charge of our democracy rather than having dirty backroom Liberal deals by Mark Carney determine our destiny.” He did not refer to politicians who changed allegiances as turncoats in that speech.

every time someone like AOC gets elected here you get them being like "yeah I couldn't get an apartment to roommate in in DC until after my salary kicked in" because our system is built to assume a "political outsider with a normal job" is actually a modern feudal lord (car dealership owner)

I'm in an US context but this is why it drives me crazy when people are like "we should cut elected office salaries to punish them" when the reality is we desperately need to raise them so that you don't have to already be independently wealthy to get elected

Very cool analysis of the submissions to a major management journal that shows how much the system of science, built for humans, is under strain as a result of AI. AI can be used to do better science or it can be used to just do more stuff. The danger is that "more" is winning due to incentives.

wasn't expecting @evgenymorozov.bsky.social's essay to bear so directly on engineers' political formation. fascinating idea that the culture of discourse in the production of software itself forms tech workers as liberal subjects (like lawyers I suppose) www.theideasletter.org/essay/silico...
The evidence isn’t merely anecdotal. A comprehensive 2023 study tracking political donations of 200,000 employees across 18 industries revealed tech workers as uniquely anti-establishment—and trailing only the bohemians of arts and entertainment in their liberal fervor. The source of this radicalism lies precisely where Gouldner placed his faith: in what he called the “culture of critical discourse” embedded in technical work itself. Thus, the researchers discovered that non-technical employees within the same tech companies showed none of this rebellious disposition, confirming that coding itself, not mere proximity to ping pong tables, contributes to their dissenting mindset.

I feel like "academic hiring" discourse is always kind of downstream of the fact that in the 50s we started building a giant public system to make a college education almost universally available and in the 80s and 90s we started taking it apart to go back to the only-the-rich model

As one of those Democratic attorneys who was camped out in West Palm Beach - taking depositions from inconsolable grandmas swearing they hadn’t voted for Buchanan, I still have trauma. 🥺 25 years ago the right wing #SCOTUS coup begin archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes....
“On This Day: A Recount Ends”

NYT front page with Bush’s face with headline showing SCOTUS deciding in favor of him 5-4

“Hanging chads would be counted no more.

On this day in 2000, the Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that there would be no additional counting of presidential votes in Florida. Thirty-five days after Election Day, the decision effectively handed the presidency to George W. Bush, then the governor of Texas.

The court determined that the Florida Supreme Court’s method for recounting ballots violated the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause and that there wasn’t enough time to establish a new way of counting the votes.”

One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires
Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

The sweeps destroy people’s belongings, deprive them of shelter, make medications and crucial documents disappear. Sweeps do not help anyone — they are cruel and traumatizing. If you don’t want encampments of unhoused people, build safe, permanent housing.

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote: propub.li/3MTlm33
Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?
