65 years ago today, the Antarctic Treaty entered into force, affirming that Antarctica is exclusively for peaceful, scientific uses by demilitarizing the entire continent, creating the first nuclear-weapon-free zone (covering testing and deployment), and banning the disposal of radioactive wastes.
