So rather than increase faculty payroll and lower student:teacher ratios, UMass would rather spend it on Claude. I would argue that a better investment would be hiring 100-200 tenure-line faculty.

Across the US, workers are souring on AI. The tech industry has insisted that AI would make workers’ lives easier and more productive, that the more people understood and used AI, the more they would like it. Something closer to the opposite has happened.

Guys I hate to break it to you, but under capitalism, automation improves productivity but doesn't actually reduce the amount of time workers must work to survive. Instead, productivity gains are captured as profit. Only worker organizing will reduce our labor time. Yes, this applies to 'AI'

Our classes are creating publications that we'll share publicly, and we're exploring layers of GenAI protection: hosting everything behind a web AI firewall, using CAPTCHA + Glaze, managing email requests (rather than posting openly). I RESENT the Labor of Avoidance these assholes have necessitated.

Quite liked this from Blekhman. There's real value for AI in science--especially the (currently) expensive simulations. But the real bottlenecks are getting funding, recruiting participants, approving IRB etc. I would also note that most AI barons have signed onto an assault on these institutions.
