🇦🇷💥🇺🇾 OTD 1924: the first ever GOL OLÍMPICO! Argentine Cesário Onzari scored DIRECT FROM A CORNER vs Uruguay in Buenos Aires; the goal became a 'gol olímpico' because Uruguay were reigning Olympic champions. (Until 14th June 1924 such goals had not been permitted.)

OTD 2005: a 19-year old Radamel Falcao scored his first goals for River Plate, a brace in a 3-1 win against Independiente. Falcao —who made his debut in Colombia aged just 13!— left his home country aged 15 to join River's academy, spending 8 years in Argentina.

OTD 2022: Argentinos de Quilmes (third tier) THRICE changed their goalkeeper! 🤯 First choice Vijande got injured, replaced by sub-keeper Meli, sent off shortly after. Defender Morro took the gloves but conceded two in 10 minutes and was replaced by defender Ormart! They lost 4-1.

OTD 1935: Enrique Omar Sívori was born. Sívori began his career at River Plate before being sold to Juventus in 1957. The sale allowed Club Atlético River Plate to finalise the El Monumental, which until then had been nicknamed The Monumental Horseshoe! Sívori played for both Argentina & Italy.

🇧🇷 OTD 1977: a 36-year old Pelé (22 days from his 37th birthday) played his last football match; it was a friendly with 'O Rei' playing one half for New York Cosmos and one half for Santos FC. Pelé scored a freekick for the North American side. 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.

🇦🇷 OTD 1929: Ernesto Grillo was born! Grillo is most remembered for his goal against England on 14th May 1953. In front of 120,000 spectators at El Monumental, Grillo took on several England players, scoring "el gol imposible". 14th May subsequently became "Footballer's Day"!

OTD 2013: Juan Román Riquelme became the player with the most appearances at La Bombonera, matching another Boca Juniors legend Silvio Marzolini's 194 games (from 1972). 'Román' went on to play a total of 206 times at the mystical ground, a record which is unlikely to be broken.
