Interethnic Violence in Baku, 1905: the Beginning of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Conflict
Abstract Primordial nationalists characterise the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict as one of perennial enmity that has ancient roots and continues to this day. Nevertheless, the modern conflict as it exists today is one whose roots can be pinpointed in the not-too-distant past. The mass violence that took place in Baku in February 1905 can be regarded as the first instance of massacres between Armenians and Azerbaijanis that took on mass proportions and were interethnic in character. This episode of violence set off a chain of Armenian-Azerbaijani massacres across Russian Transcaucasia that led to the hardening of ethnic boundaries and the reification of ethnic and national identities that continues to have consequences for Armenian-Azerbaijani relations to this very day. Through a variety of first-hand Armenian, Azerbaijani, Russian and European sources, this paper explores the roots of the February massacres, the massacres themselves and their aftermath.
