The lipidomic architecture of the mouse brain - Nature
A spatial lipidomic atlas of the mouse brain reveals more than 500 biochemical territories that mirror cell types and connectivity, capture oligodendrocyte heterogeneity and ventricular zonation, and ...

All of these were studied without a high-resolution reference for healthy lipid architecture. With the atlas we can now ask which lipizones a mutation alters, whether a disease erases a territory or shifts its composition, and which circuits are exposed when a lipid class disappears.

Beyond basic biology, many neurological diseases turn out to be lipid diseases: rare ones that start from a single failing enzyme or transporter, and common ones. #neurodegeneration #RareDisease #lysosomaldisease

Lipizones also respond to physiological state. During pregnancy they are extensively remodelled across cortex and white matter, and in white matter their patterns appear to retain the order in which tracts were myelinated.

In our analyses, gene expression predicts only part of this landscape, so membrane composition has to be measured directly rather than inferred from the transcriptome.

Giovanni D’Angelo @giodang.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Lipizones follow neither cell-type nor anatomical boundaries. The same lipizone can extend from a neuron's cell body to its distant axon terminals, or cut across several cell types sharing a location, capturing relationships that a map built around cell bodies would miss.

Lipids alone define more than 500 biochemical territories with distinct compositions, which we call lipizones. #SpatialOmics #MassSpectrometryImaging

#lipidtime: It's a lipid universe. Today in Nature we publish the Lipid Brain Atlas, the first map of membrane lipid composition across the entire mouse brain, a layer of organisation that cell-type and transcript maps had left out. #lipidomics #neuroscience #BrainAtlas
