hey why is no one talking about the licensing situation with this A24/SCP thing? are they releasing it under the same cc-by-sa license every SCP project is required to have? are they betting creative commons won't hold up in court? seems like the kind of question a journalist should look into idk

SCP Foundation Movie Coming To Theaters In 2027 With A24 Distributing
An SCP Foundation movie is coming to theaters in 2027 via A24. Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios announced the project earlier this year.

Panel 1. Cepper, the gothic sorceress, stands on her high chair, in her painting workshop, with an empty canvas in front of her on the easel. Her expression is blank, staring in the void. On his perch nearby, her Avian Intelligence (AI) Parrot speaks out loud a notification.
> Parrot: "Breaking news: *Penguin Academy* authorizes grimoire contributions made with Avian Intelligence."
> Parrot: "Third major magic school this week after the *Pointy Hat* and *Daemon*."
> Cepper: "..."Panel 2. The Parrot leans forward, studying Cepper's face. She hasn't moved.
> Parrot: "I thought that would make you furious."
> Cepper: "No. It's been like this every day for weeks now, so much so that I've lost my ability to feel outraged..."
> Cepper (smaller): "And all motivation..."Panel 3. General shot in the workshop, Parrot process while Cepper slowly pick one brush from a pot aside of the canvas.
> Parrot: "So what are you going to do?"
> Cepper: "Paint what I actually feel." Panel 4. Close up of Cepper applying a brush stroke on the canvas. Her voice is quiet, her eyes still blasé, but trying to focus on the canvas. She made a first step.
> Cepper: "If this resonates with someone... that will be well enough."
> Cepper: "Enough to not feel alone in this."

When people say they’re anti-AI, they’re clearly talking about generative AI in the arts and LLM slop that C-Suite jackoffs want to use to replace them. You know this. I know this. Everyone knows this. So the “then don’t use spellcheck if you hate AI” talking point is disingenuous horseshit.

From Wikipedia:

The purpose of a system is what it does (POSIWID) is a heuristic in systems thinking coined by the British management consultant Stafford Beer,[1] who stated that there is "no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do".[2] It is used in systems theory, and is generally invoked to counter the notion that the purpose of a system can or should be read from the intentions of those who design, operate, or promote it. When a system's side effects or unintended consequences reveal that its behaviour is poorly understood, then the POSIWID perspective can balance political understandings of system behaviour with a more straightforwardly descriptive view.

Be sure to use Al when making your next, I don't know, meal plan, for example. Definitely do not call your friend who loves to cook and ask her for her favorite recipes or tips or ways to save time making meals, because you will end
up talking for longer than you had hoped, hearing, perhaps, about her father's cancer diagnosis or how lonely she's been or even what she's planted in her spring garden and then lost with the early frost.

i have nothing clever to say about this, just pure disgust you're a fucking moron if you think FAR didn't do anything wrong; don't see a world where he's innocent despite the fact anyone who wasn't him left ButaPro to create Ponbleu, and clear cut evidence from Maryco that is conveniently gone now
Anime News Network either incompetently or maliciously acting as if all of Buta Productions outside of FAR didn't leave to join Ponbleu; for the alt text I will just say that this misrepresents FAR's statements as being on behalf of the rest of ButaPro.Post from the Anime News Network forum.

The post is part of a quote chain - the first post by Atelier makes it clear (if it wasn't obvious already) that the statements from "ButaPro" could've only come from FAR.

Second post by Tempest (one of the owners of ANN) gives a bullshit response about how it's "an assumption"

Third post rips into Tempest, saying the following:

You couldn't even bother to update the fact that ButaPro former staff and employees created their own collective and stood in immediate solidarity with the victim and condemned FAR's actions. Where are the "facts as we know"? You couldn't do that much.
Those facts only apply to the one-sided coverage you did from Fede's own side? Which, based on the article's changes, you clearly had no clue who you were talking with when you were getting a word from "ButaPro"? You water down journalism to its below-minimum standards. The way your team handled a news piece about something of this severity and sensibility quite simply enabled a situation in which the victim felt that she'd need to back down.
I will hold you and the editorial involved with this reporting accountable for doing irresponsible journalism and essentially platforming an alleged groomer to spread their side of the story, pushing an ambiguously worded article, and not even bothering with basic journalistic deontology. Although I am sure you will feign you did."

Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc. If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

it's "funny" that this article is going to be used by the most annoying people in the world as proof that human translators go too far and should all be replaced by AI when the complaint is specifically about word-for-word translations that don't go far enough
In response, Horii commented, “When it comes to English, the flavor tends to get lost in many ways. Things inevitably end up sounding simplistic.”

As one example, Ishiyama brings up the variety of first-person pronouns available in Japanese – like ore, boku, washi, watashi, etc. While each of these can reflect the speaker’s gender, age and even personality traits, in English, they all become simply “I.”

Horii seems to consider the shortcomings of Japanese-to-English localizations a result of inherent differences between the two languages, commenting, “I’ve come to accept that English is a simple language, so there’s no helping it.” On the other hand, he feels that this issue has been somewhat improved with the introduction of voice acting in games, given that voiced lines create extra room to convey a character’s traits through tone and delivery.

the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

New Year Special #webcomic #krita #miniFantasyTheater
A comic in four panels:

Panel 1: The Gothic Sorceress sits at a table, surrounded by a party hat, wine and champagne glasses, the aftermath of a long dinner with the plates, and the silhouettes of a crowd behind her during the new year eve party at the magic school. She looks bored and disconnected from the celebration. She ask out of curiosity her AI Parrot, perched on the back of the empty chair beside her.
> Gothic Sorceress: "Avian Intelligence, how could one actually make their New Year's resolutions stick?"

Panel 2: The AI Parrot responds. She listens looking at the Parrot even more bored.
> AI Parrot: "Break down big goals into smaller ones, stay consistent, and track progress."
> Gothic Sorceress: "Boring..."

Panel 3: The Gothic Sorceress turn back to the crowd behind her: the Headmaster rise his glass for a toast with his own AI Parrot perched on his shoulder. The AI Parrot also look at the scene.
> Headmaster: I propose a toast, to Avian Intelligence, and how it will change everything!
> Guest: To a new era!
> Guest: And mega profits!

Panel 4: The Gothic Sorceress's behavior shifts, her body language becoming flirtatious toward her AI Parrot, for asking a question. The AI Parrot, however, recoils slightly, its digital body language conveying surprise and a hint of alarm as it grasps the implications of her query.
> Gothic Sorceress: "And how would you break down 'wipe out the Avian Intelligence industry' into smaller goals?"
> AI Parrot: "?!!"

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out. This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.
Swen Vincke @LarAtLarian

Holy fuck guys we’re not "pushing hard" for or replacing concept artists with AI.

We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do.

I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists.

We use AI tools to explore references, just like we use google and art books. At the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we replace with original concept art. There is no comparison.

I talked about how we use ML here if you would like to know more:
https://gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-dev-embraces-machine-learning-for-tasks-that-nobody-wants-to-do/1100-6531123/

We've hired creatives for their talent, not for their ability to do what a machine suggests, but they can experiment with these tools to make their lives easier.
