Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now. This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.

A lot of things make me feel kind of dumb, including how to take at face value the logic of “we are a multibillion dollar transnational industry building a vengeful elder god, and we definitely won’t stop unless you regulate us the way we want, which is a secret.”

Make your favorite film sound as boring as possible without giving away the title: Man disrupts his ex’s new engagement and impending wedding years after he ghosted her. Probably too much kissing for some audiences.

Now with alt text, as this fabulous interview richly deserves.
Take me to the moment where you finally arrived on the beach after swimming so far. What did that feel like?

A little uncomfortable because my legs gave out and I fell onto some barnacles, so that was fun. And then there was a bunch of people, so that was wonderfully overstimulating, so I had to put on a smile — "Yay, I'm suffering on the inside! Too many people!" Had to pretend I was an extrovert. Now, you had a support team nearby on a boat. How reassuring was that for you during this process?

They were great. They did everything that they were supposed to. They had to give me food every 30 minutes just to keep my blood sugar levels up. And because I was nauseous, I did a lot of, "no, I don't want to eat, go away!" But they forced me to eat. So that was good.

Did you think about giving up?

Oh, God, no. I was more so just thinking, "oh, can this be done yet? Nope, still not there."I just swam through the stream. Otherwise, if I didn't keep swimming, I was going to be sitting in my own vomit.

What made you decide that you wanted to do this particular stretch?

I just think every time I've ever been on the ferry, I thought, I kind of want to jump in and swim across. And I've had a lot of people tell me that's not possible. So I think a lot of it was spite. Right before jumping in, I thought "this is going to be the worst day of my life," and then when I got in the water, I thought, "oh, it's not too bad temperature-wise, so I shouldn't have any problem making it to the other side." I was really concerned about hypothermia.

Melanie, you don't feel great now, you didn't feel great when you finished, and you were feeling dread at the beginning and worried about hypothermia. Why did you do this?

I guess I thrive on self-loathing.

Fascinating paper on the progression of women in academia. 👩🏻‍🔬 ⚛️ 🧪 #AcademicSky docs.iza.org/dp18477.pdf?... Here's an excerpt from the conclusion:
When women do obtain tenure, the effects extend well beyond their own careers. Beyond the direct promotion of the qualifying candidate, departments experience on average one additional female promotion over the subsequent fifteen years, a substantial expansion of the female PhD pipeline, and improved retention and career progression among female doctoral graduates. These effects are concentrated in departments where women are underrepresented, but not entirely absent, suggesting that a minimal female presence is a precondition for trickle-down effects to materialize, whether through mutual support, departmental influence, or other channels that require women not to be entirely isolated.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

I would kill or die for Larry
A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."
