Sure, go ahead, post about a relatively important distinction that matters, I say to myself. People can handle it without being too weird, I reassure myself.
Me: think we need to differentiate between "Al uses a lot of water!" (not necessarily bad on its own) and "Al stresses local water supplies" (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even "modest" use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers

Until recently we were effectively insulated from some of these questions by the practical absence of entities that pushed them forward. It was the stuff of thought experiments about space aliens or speculative computers. As the imagined entities become real, the uncomfortable choices are exposed.

i think this kind of gets at a larger blind spot for a lot of well-meaning progressive policy schemes people start from the justifiable position of "we should do more to help people that are below average" and extrapolate it to apply to the absolute worst of the worst

Yes parents are a big factor here. I live in an area where education is simply not valued by most parents. Now my parents valued education, which is why they pulled me from the public school system where I live after the school didn’t want to do anything to help me with my learning disability.

IMO because the thesis in the 2010s was that kids succeed or fail primarily based on the resources expended or the median quality of their classmates. When the bleak reality is that (a) a lot turns on parents supplementing education at home and (b) it's not the median, but the bottom, that controls.

Kids certainly benefit from having high achievers in their classroom. But by *far* the biggest delta is how bad the worst kid in your classroom is. An underperformer who can self-regulate is fine. Someone truly disruptive is going to tank his class for years unless he is triaged out ASAP.

Again: what we’re doing here is defining “understanding” as “the thing that humans do.” If a model is accurately absorbing new information, solving unsolved problems of incredible difficulty, engaging in detailed back-and-forths, but is not “understanding,” the word “understanding” has no meaning.
