Screenshot from the linked blog post that reads: Fundamentally, parasocial attachments are fake friendships. So the question remains: if you found out that one of your IRL friends was accused of rape, would you continue to be friends with them? Personally, I would not. The next time something like this surfaces - and it will - I implore everyone reading this to ask themselves that question.

Rereading (listening) to the first two Ninth House books by Leigh Bardugo, ahead of getting stuck into Dead Beat (#3), and am being reminded a) how good they are, b) why I'll continue recommending them until the end of time, c) why I had Academic Thoughts about them that I need to develop.

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.

Cannot tell you how much I hate this & how ashamed & angry I am that @ukri.org have taken this step. We KNOW this sort of gAI is socially biased, we KNOW it favours slopAI output over human-written. Our research landscape is falling apart due to underfunding, & they do this? it's *appalling*

it is incredibly fucked up that the UK government and police consider it a much worse crime to wear a t-shirt or wave a placard with 'palestine action' on it than to block ports and attack lifeboats

Re-listening to the first two books to prepare myself for this beauty that I pre-ordered. Last time I read this series I had Academic Thoughts about it, so we'll see how long it takes me to open my notes app!
A hand holds up a hardback copy of Dead Beat (Ninth House book 3) by Leigh Bardugo. In the background, out of focus, is a fireplace and Persian style carpet. On the mantelpiece above the fireplace sits a click, behind which a mirror has been mounted to the wall.

Bought a "gingerbread" chai mix, thinking it would delightfully usher in autumn, and was shocked and dismayed to learn that "gingerbread" here equates to "the fiery pits of ginger hell".

Macklemore is a real case study in how you can be Kind of a Dumb Guy but still end up broadly on the right side of most things merely by being generally quite good-natured, because questions like "should trans people exist?" and "is it bad to do a genocide?" are actually really uncomplicated.

Trans rights is inherently a bodily autonomy issue. Just like abortion rights is. We can't have gender equity or reproductive freedom without trans rights. Full stop. You can yell at me and make up shit that you claim I've said if it makes you feel better. I don't care. I'm right. And you know it.

I'll add some nuance here — most local pushback against data centers is actually quite fluent, and not grounded in the more wild-eyed rhetoric you see on social media. Very often, the core premise is a simple, correct one: you can't trust what Big Tech says in its promises to a local community.

Crying over an AU of my favourite Persuasion fic (written by the same author), which has the premise "what if Anne had a BFF, and his name was Fitzwilliam Darcy?". The answer is that her life is a million times better because someone's in her corner, and she's happy 5 years ahead of schedule 😭

Just left the theatre after 'Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger’s Drift', and it was *so* good. Wonderfully theatrical in ways that delight my "studied a lot of theatre in undergrad" self, from the self-conscious doubling of actors to the whizzy sets to the literal dream ballet. 10/10 👏
The view of the stage from the audience. The entire stage has been painted like a grassy knoll on a sunny day, with a round cutout in the centre of the back wall, with the words "Midsomer County: Badgers Drift" encircling the opening. An assortment of houses can be seen through the opening, depicting the village of Badgers Drift.

Ons thing that's really bugging me about the "PhD level intelligence" is that a PhD isn't a measure of intelligence, it's a measure of commitment to study and specialisation in a narrow field (and opportunity to do so). "PhD level intelligence" isn't really a meaningful phrase
