How could an associate professor in divinity at Cambridge be expected to know that lying is bad? thecritic.co.uk/mone...
Ah yes, James Orr. A lot of us had been hazy about what it is exactly that associate professors in a divinity department do all day. It doesn’t seem to involve a lot of work: Orr is often to be seen at Reform events in London, which take up the whole morning even for those of us with offices down the road. Now we know he was also sipping cocktails while discussing ways in which wealthy foreigners might be able to get round the laws that ban them donating to the party.

The associate professor of divinity was filmed explaining to an undercover reporter that so long as everyone kept their mouths shut, there was no way that the authorities would ever find out. Orr spent four years as a postdoctoral fellow in theology, ethics and public life at Oxford, and it would be fascinating to know at what point he developed this theory of What the Electoral Commission Don’t Know Won’t Hurt Them. Perhaps he was off sick the day they opened the gospel of Luke: “What you have said in the dark will be h

Wildfire in Clacton
AS temperatures soared on Friday, Essex fire authorities reported things were so bad that a man's pants had caught fire.
The individual, identified as Nigel Farage, had claimed Essex police had told him to keep away from his by-election declaration.
"We've never seen such an enormous fire coming from a single pair of Union Jack Y-fronts," said a police spokesman. "We urge members of the public to avoid pants on fire by at least coming up with a half-decent excuse for their cowardice."

A reminder of this day in 2016, from The Decade In Tory
The shit hit the fan.
This came as a surprise, because with the exception of the millions of people who had predicted the shit would hit the fan, nobody had predicted the shit would hit the fan. But it did.
The referendum was held on a Thursday. On Friday, the pound fell to a level not seen since 1985. Shares in British banks dropped 30 percent. The Bank of England had to stump up £250 billion to stabilise the markets, which, even compared to all the large amounts of wasted money previously mentioned, still manages to stand out as a really quite gigantic amount of money: £1 per second for 7,927 years; or £3,600 per hour, every single hour since the earliest known human civilisation arose in ancient Mesopotamia.
By Monday, total stock market losses were £2.17 trillion, which would have paid for the UK’s membership to the EU for the next 241 years.
The only global credit ratings agency to have thus far maintained a AAA rating for the UK, dumped us down to AA. The other credit agencies, who had already had us at AA because we were a nation heading in the wrong direction, now downgraded us yet further.
This might sound like an abstract thing, but it meant the repayments on all this new borrowing were suddenly higher, which meant the government suddenly had even less money for the NHS or public services.
Shit: meet fan.
But it wasn’t all fun with money: we also experienced a five-fold increase in racist hate crimes in the week following the referendum, which police said was just the tip of the iceberg, because such attacks were “significantly under-reported”.
As he trundled in to make his triumphal address, Boris Johnson emanated the sweaty terror of somebody from the HR department suddenly called upon to make good on their boast that he knew how to defuse a bomb. Johnson and Gove had convened a celebratory press conference, which with the sound off you could have easily mistaken for an official response to a school shooting. The body language screamed “oh giddy Jesus, this is awful” as the pair of them gazed unblinking at the floor, pale and shellshocked. They looked like a pair of gormless game-show contestants who by a series of miraculous flukes had accidentally won a speedboat, and only now did it dawn on them how much it would cost to run it.
