You know a gene is selfish when its DNA twists the wrong way, as demonstrated by the left-handed double-helix proudly adorning the 50th Anniversary Edition of the multimillion copy bestseller on this topic.
The front cover of the 50th Anniversary Edition of the multimillion copy bestseller "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins, featuring an image of DNA that is bold, colourful, and chirally incorrect.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

When someone says "Gender ideology" they mean "trans people". It is a euphemism designed to make it possible to say; "I oppose trans people existing" by saying instead "I oppose gender ideology" enabling them to avoid being accused of genocidal fanaticism and an esprit fasciste.

By the end of August 1944, around one third of the 5.7m forced labourers in the Greater Reich were women. The majority of female forced labourers came from Eastern Europe. This series of photos was taken in Kaunitz following an evacuation march when the camp was liberated by American troops.
Four women gathered at a doorway: three in coats and headscarves and a younger woman in a short-sleeved sweater with bandaged forearms looking to the side.Six women in work clothes and headscarves clustered in a doorway; three look at the camera while a young woman in a trench coat inspects a small wrapped item and another holds a bread roll, a candid mid-20th-century group moment.Three people standing with large white crosses painted on the backs of their coats, indicating they’ve been visibly marked for identification or public shaming. An older woman wearing a headscarf has her arm around a teenage girl; both stand close and look solemnly at the camera in a historical black-and-white portrait conveying closeness and quiet resilience.

Prominent ‘gender critical’ transphobe in UN called out for “proximity to US conservative groups [ADF]”… “Reem Alsalem, has taken views that regressively depart from UN human rights doctrine, displaying how an ideologically skewed mandate can undermine the consensus of UN human rights bodies.”…
The UN's human rights system is being hollowed out so it can be captured
By Victor Madrigal-BorlozProtecting UN human rights spaces becomes more urgent when one considers that the architecture is not being weakened for destruction but for capture. The current UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, has taken views that regressively depart from UN human rights doctrine, displaying how an ideologically skewed mandate can undermine the consensus of UN human rights bodies on gender, sexual and reproductive health and rights, the human rights of LGBT and gender-diverse people, rainbow families, sex work and surrogacy. Their proximity to those of US conservative groups such as the C-Fam and the Alliance Defending Freedom raises questions about how far they might go in supporting policies set out in the Trump administration's blueprint, Project 2025.

Only a financial journalist would look at academic publishing and think "what that sector needs is more mergers and private equity" to deal with the mess that financialisation has caused. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
Mergers could help by creating savings that offset the increased costs of quality control. The industry’s biggest four groups account for two-fifths of articles published. That leaves plenty of scope to roll up the unwieldy long tail that includes university publishers and professional organisations such as IEEE. There have been a few smaller transactions so far, such as Wiley’s £337mn acquisition of Emerald Publishing in June. But Informa’s decision earlier this week to separate Taylor & Francis from its live events business may give dealmakers a boost.

Private equity can help, having already dipped a toe into the sector: Springer Nature was previously owned by companies including EQT and BC Partners. And the financials still look attractive.
