Stretch them

There's what DHS said...and then there's reality ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
Screenshot of the first three paragraphs of the linked Balls and Strikes article, reading as follows:

On the morning of Sunday, September 20, police officers in the Chicago suburb of Evanston responded to a 911 call about a confrontation in the street. When the officers arrived, they found a man on the ground who reported injuries to his head, neck, and teeth. Soon, the officers learned that the injured man was a U.S. citizen, and his assailants were federal immigration agents.

The Department of Homeland Security put out a statement on Tuesday claiming that the beaten man “resembled the target” of an immigration enforcement operation, and that he was “not cooperative” with agents’ investigation. “Once the individual finally identified himself,” said DHS, immigration officers “left the scene without further incident.”

A video of the incident shows that immigration officers pinned the man to the ground while he repeatedly yelled, “I’m a fucking U.S. citizen,” and while concerned witnesses asked why the agents were “fucking him up.” Eventually, the agents drove off without rendering medical aid. People tried to comfort the man, who remained motionless on the ground.

What’s really peculiar about the “rapture” theology is that it’s based on a really convoluted and selective reading of scripture, dates back no further than the 19th C, is rejected by the Orthodox, Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Reformed, and is basically contradicted by the Apostle’s Creed. But…

E.B. White established this in 1949! Move on already!
Screenshot from E.B. White's essay "Here is New York": "There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter —the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last— the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion."

fascists only have one move, which is to find people to blame problems on. they can't address any real problems bc that's not part of the story. they just have to find people to blame. and anybody who doesn't play along becomes somebody to blame

ended up talking to the 4th grader this morning about fascists, which can be hard to explain simply. i said fascists get mad the world isn't how they want, so they make up a story: things used to be good, but certain people ruined it, and if we just get rid of them everything will be good again

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:
Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?
