Symbols matter. White House isn't a palace. Kennedy Center is for the general public to enjoy. We don't have a triumphal arch in DC because that's imperial. We don't put the president's face on money because it's monarchical. It's about tearing down everything that says we're a democratic republic.

All else aside, these people telling others that the work they’ve done for years, work about which they clearly know absolutely nothing, can be “augmented” by their little plagiarism machines, is so arrogant I can barely stand it.

This is a really good thread. Often this conversation — pro or anti-AI — sees students and faculty as its only characters. What choices should these characters make? Are they cheating? Falling behind? Resisting? Giving in? But it's the institutions they're in that are setting the values.

The problem is that the vast majority of American universities are putting the full onus of AI policy onto individual instructors—sure, we can write “no AI” on a syllabus, but then we have to become the AI police (& judges), which hurts relationships with students & pulls us away from instruction

Crucially, the GLOVE has limitations, chief among them that for the device to work effectively and deliver its restraining pain shock, it must come into contact with the subject's bare skin. According to Compliant Technologies, the gloves won't work through dry clothing or thick hair. The gloves will work, however, if the subject is wearing thin, wet clothing, such as soaked T-shirts or blouses. The GLOVE also does not like being dunked in water and will likely be rendered inoperable if this happens.

everyone — consumers, publishers, writers — would wind up better off if web browser ad-blockers didn't exist and the rationalizations for using one are mostly clever justifications for what's just selfish behavior with obvious negative social consequences.

> Counterpoint - I like using the Internet to read articles and the ad blocker is the thing which makes that possible.

> Would the writers and publishers be better off if I didn't visit their website?

i mean if they are financially supported by advertising and you are a free-rider who views their content without seeing any advertisements, yes they are almost tautologically better off if you never visit their website

“The effect of ChatGPT on educators’ lives is catastrophic. Whether you intended to do it or not, you’ve made every teacher’s life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago. So, just let that settle in… If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They’ll never have the ability to say their truth and tell their own story. And that’s silencing an entire generation or two.”

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
